In perspective to shulker boxes, Backpacks could provide extra hotbars (maybe on the sides of the screen), like a dedicated food slot, water bucket slot, rocket slot, providing direct access to the enderchest (potentially a variant of the backpack like an ender-backpack that you can craft with backpacks surrounded by obsidian), and an overall sidebar that gives direct access to daily essentials irrespective of where the items are in the inventory. This sub-idea is because hotbars have become limiting and difficult to manage in light of the massive recent additions to Minecraft, and I think it's time the hotbar system catches up. Using backpacks to make the hotbars more convenient can be a way to go.

Backpacks is something a lot of people want in the game, especially with a cave update. However, they should not be over powered and come at a small cost.

    1. Backpacks cannot be craftable - They should be treated similarly to saddles; either found in loot chests, fished up, or traded with villagers (leather workers specifically).

    2. They would only have 9 slots of inventory - This makes it nice for just that bit of extra storage in the early game for say mining, but not be enough to replace everyone's desire of shulker boxes making shulker boxes still an end game reward.

    3. Chest plates would not be wearable while wearing a backpack -  Having a backpack should have a cost if a player wants one. That cost being, you cannot wear a chest plate if you have a backpack on. This gives the player a choice, extra armor for protection? Or extra storage to hold more stuff?

    4. Can they be placed in your inventory if they have items in them? - No, because this would make them essentially tiny shulker boxes and would technically replace the purpose of shulker boxes as moveable storage. If you want to take the items out of the backpack, you have to remove them yourself. This also means you can only have one backpack on you at a time.

I think backpacks could offer maybe 2 or so more rows into your inventory. So like 18 more spaces and it would be different. From the shulker box. Because it could be early game. Maybe only requiring leather an iron. But the catch is. You would have to wear it where your chest plate is. Similar to the elytra. So you would have to choose between. Safety, mobility, and storage. (Chestplate, elytra, and backpack) and I think backpacks should just act as regular inventory storage. So you could but shulkers in them. Making it a lot easier to transfer a lot of stuff from one place to the other.

I really like the idea of a backpack being placed in the chest-plate slot. They definitely shouldn't be able to transport as much stuff as a shulker box. Maybe it would add an extra nine slots to the player inventory. This is would be great for builders because there are so many blocks, stairs, slabs, etc., in the game to detail builds with and the player inventory can't hold all of them.

A backpack could be something the player must remove first in order to access its inventory, making it a bit more balanced.

I think that is a great idea! People are saying Shulker boxes are basically backpacks, but that's not until super late in the game. With that in mind, a backpack could be created early game. Maybe crafted with leather and a chest?

Still leaning towards Munchies & Mobilities. Even with the accessory slot for the backpack early game, late game with boxes you can have combat at all times. It also allows flying. You still have the tedious method of dropping and picking up boxes, but lose the new hotbar. This also keeps those mechanics separate from the offhand with a shield or grapple, allowing the preference, early or late, for combat or storage.

The cape that comes late game is something you only get near the end. Sacrificing armor early for one utility solution is not an answer.

Question: how does one contact Mojang or Microsoft on such context? I hold no proprietary stance, but am curious nonetheless.

I can imagine it working like this: Instead of it working like a shulker where you have to put it down to open it, all it would do is add like 5 more spaces to your inventory. Maybe they could be dungeon loot instead of craftable, and you can enchant them to add more space to the inventory.

Maybe limit the amount you can hold, and make you go slower.

This feels to much like a mod and doesnt fit minecraft's theme. If it were added I would prefer a just worse version of the shulker box thats easier to craft for earlier game. Maybe like a reinforced chest which is just a chest surrounded by iron and only gives three additional slots

A perfect way to balance this is to make it like elytra and you cant where a chest plate and back pack at the same time.

Maybe backpacks could fill the chest armor slot, that way they wouldn't replace shulker boxes or become too op

I think this a great idea for fairly early on the game and it won’t be over powered if:
    - you can only carry one
    - it takes up one inventory space or you have to wear it instead of a chest plate
    - it only has say 9 slots
    - drops like any other item when you die and burns in lava
    - takes damage with use in some way but can have the same enchantments as tools/armour

I also think you should have to place it down to access it and you can put it inside a normal chest or Ender chest like a real life bag. But you can’t put it in a shulker else you could add more space to a shulker.

I think 2 string, 1 chest and 6 leather would be a good recipe as you can make a bag shape with a chest in the middle. And I don’t think silk touch needs to be a thing to pick it back up you just pick it back up again.

I’ve also seen other suggest ideas for upgrades with materials so maybe it starts of smaller but if it’s upgraded it can eventually reach the capacity of a single chest (idk about doubtless chest)

I think I’ve covered all grounds

Shulker boxes are good we cannot deny, but they are difficult to obtain and backpacks would have a certain facility to create.

You can't just say backpacks... there is more to it that revolves around the implementation of backpacks, ie...

In my mind - Trading currency (Emeralds) should be a totally separate counter balance which is always attached to the player. - The number of times I have went off on an adventure and forgotten emeralds, came across a wandering trader and wanted something is unreal. Plus having to trade with new village and travelling back and forth for emeralds acquired somewhere else, its annoying, it just wouldn't happen IRL - someone would carry their money in a purse, they wouldn't leave it in a chest in the village where they acquired it... Diamonds could also benefit from being in their own counter attached the the player.

The Wandering trader could benefit from better trades as well, they are a bit uninteresting.

Expanding on this, a survival mode, that doesn't get rid of inventory when you die and instead deducts your trading currency. (or a diamond) (rather than having to play that way with cheats and no achievements). The number of tears my 10 year old has cried because they have lost the most enchanted thing.

Tools and weapons should be a separate section on the hotbar, sword/bow, pickaxe, shovel, axe, hoe, shears, flint n steel, then another 4 spaces for user set items - then the main inventory space should be a backpack.

An inbuilt bed into a backpack would make sense, anyone camping has rollup and sleeping back in a backpack. Would mean not forgetting a bloomin bed.

I think that this is a AMAZING idea!😁 There should be per say, 10-15 spaces in it, and I think you should put it in your offhand to hold it! That would be a really cool feature!😁

    I have an idea.
    1. Backpacks are crafted from 6 leather, 2 leads and 1 chest.
2.You can find them in dungeons.
    3.Not stackable
4.An new inventory slot above offhand, for backpacks and elytra
5.Levels increase durability but not space
6.For more space you need to combine backpacks
7.When you wear it a new header called Backpack appears on top of your inventory, when it has more than 4 rows of space, it appears on the right
    8.Backpack keeps content
9.You can place it and you open it like a chest
    10.Mine it instantly
    11.Leather ones can be dyed
12.Can be enchanted with Unbreaking, Mending, and Expanding(adds 7 slots per level, 4 levels)
13.Intsead of dropping, it is placed when you die

That's all my ideas for now. If I have more i'll comment again!
(sorry for the bad English but I live in Romania)

What if it had 9 storage (1/3 of chest) AND mobile crafting table. So you can craft on the go.

I suggest a new slot for the backpack. Possibly two versions, a small backpack, and a large backpack. A small back pack would be an emerald surrounded by leather in the crafting table, a large would be a shulker box surrounded by leather. The small backpack would add eight inventory spaces, the large would add sixteen inventory spaces. When you take off the backpack, like a shulker box, the items would stay in the back pack, backpacks cannot be put in shulker boxes.

I don't know if I've said this before or if anyone else has mentioned this but I think the backpack should only have 9 slots of inventory space. It would be balanced and wouldn't be as overpowered as shulker boxes.
