Everyone is talking about "expanding the inventory"——Does nobody else consider that the player already carries an implied 27-slot backpack? Think about it, if they add a backpack to the game, it should REALLY increase a human's carry capacity, by about 3× or 4× as it does irl.

Side, note: A DONKEY can only carry 9 stacks of items. A LLAMA can carry 12. Our resident two-foots can carry as much as a stationary chest.

I am NOT for adding backpacks without major changes. If they expand the inventory beyond 36 slots, it would be an admission that we don't know where those 36 slots came from!

Then the Pistons would also be no Item im Minecraft, because there was also a Mod before?
I like the Idea also for Early Game.

Especially for Farming sessions or Adventuring would a Backpack be a good item.

Yes,but it depends. I think that the player already has way too much inventory for a human to possibly carry, and I understand that this is kind of fitting the style of minecraft, but if Mojang wanted to go for a more realistic (yet not hardcore realism) they could remove the inventory leaving you with only the hotbar when you start a new world. This would add the urge to set up a base with chests as you can carry little. Then as you progress you can craft higher tier backpacks, which can store more items. Whether or not the highest tier backpack would be the size of the current inventory or bigger, I'm not sure, it would require testing. Maybe the bigger the backpack, the slower you move or the faster your hunger reduces from sprinting.

Edit: This is not even taking shulker boxes into account

I like that, myst3ry man101. You mention backpack tiers; Thinking about it, I myself usually fill up the hotbar on Day One. So what do we think of having a 9-slot woolen sack? The recipe doesn't include spider string, because you'd need it on the first day.

Ooh, yess, also, on Night One you'd be like "I can't delve very deep into this cave, I don't have a big enough backpack." And thus there's actually a challenge for rushing full iron armour by the morning of Day Two. Yess, I like this.

Edit: Oh, and making the highest tier backpack greater than the current inventory size would make a lot of players happy to take such inventory changes!

Backpacks should be equipped in the Chestplate spot so that only one can be used at any time. Wearing will give you another row of inventory space. If taken off, all items are thrown at the ground as is the same if you craft more than you can carry. This way, shulker boxes are still relevant. The ability to store a lot of items in your inventory while only using one space will be accessible only during endgame.

If one needs the extra space, however, they can weight the pros and cons. You won’t be able to wear an armor chestplate so you will have less protection, but more ability to carry things. This will make it very useful for resource gathering, mining in familiar areas, or even moving long distance!

I think the crafting recipe should be a leather chestplate with a chest in the middle instead of leather. Perhaps upgrades could be implemented too. Iron, gold, diamond, and even netherite (to protect from lava). These could all up the rows given. With the highest giving you double the inventory space!

I do not think backpacks should be used for storage, but I do think they should be in the game.

I think that the player should drop the backpack like some gravestone mods function. On death the backpack is placed in the world holding everything in the players inventory, and possibly everything in the hotbar / armor slots with enchantments. It need not have the same functionality as shulker boxes, but it should offer some new mechanics.

Now for more of the mainstream thinking.
I think ultimately, shulker boxes fit the bill relatively well. Having a slot where you can place a shulker in the inventory to open it without placing it, perhaps by equipping a backpack like frame, would be useful.

Minecraft does need alternative ways to store items, much like toolbelts. I think the best idea would be making beasts of burden be able to carry more, making them more accessible in early game, and having them be able to teleport like other pets, this is because during late game, shulker boxes are several magnitudes better than having an animal follow you.

My suggestion if backpacks were implemented as people fear they would be, bar them from being able to hold shulker boxes, so as to not increase inventory space exponentially provided enough shulkers.

Why I think that backpacks should be in the game is because there’s not a way to “expand” your inventory until after you defeat the ender dragon. It wouldn’t have to be op because they could make it like elytra in that you can’t where it with a chest plate. They could also make it to where you can only put items in the backpack when it’s on your back, meaning, when it’s in your inventory you can’t hold items inside of it. I think that for the most part, there’s always a way to make things not overpowered.

Backpacks should be something you have to craft from leather and iron. Idk how, but it should be a little harder than that to make but it would be cool if when you where it. More slots are in your inventory. Also it would be a good idea to put gear slots. So you can wear a backpack and a chest plate. Or a chest plate and elytra. Gear slots would be great

By the time you go to the end, You are most probably done with hauling stuff, shifting the base n constructing beautiful home. Backpack would be of great help and boosts mining efficiency. As others suggested:
    1) like saddles, backpack must be non-craft-able, dungeon treasure
    2) must remove chest armor to wear it (like Elytra) and has very high durability (unlike Elytra)
    3) 9 to 12 slots
    4) ability to access items in backpack without placing it on the ground.
    5) and we can carry 1 peeky cat  or puppy to deter creepers/skeletons striking from behind (remember, no chest plate. So this would Add lot of fun)
    I just summed everyone’s ideas.

If backpacks were added it would be useful cause they could be extra inventory with out using up the main it would pop up with like its own tab on the inventory so we could have one and then the other the would just have a equip slot above the shield/totem slot well at least that how i think it would work and maybe make it so you can upgrade size but it slows you guy down with a larger size so its not to op cause if you got slowed down your chance of escaping enemys goes down and you can only have stuff in it when its on your guy

If people want it to be an easy accessible item (tool because it would go in chestplate slot) than it could be crafted with a chest and 8 leather, or if not than it could be crafted with a chest, 6 leather and a lead (as shoulder straps).

backpack: a new equipment slot(like armor) which adds a limited amount of space to the standard inventory screen. simple. no crosscutting shulker boxes.

we can carry 1 peeky cat or puppy to deter creepers/skeletons striking from behind (remember, no chest plate while backpack. So this would really complement the “adrenaline rush”

I agree with ClayGoddessSari. If we added backpacks it would have to be an early-game item and fairly week. Probably made of leather, which is common but annoying to get, you could only carry one backpack, and it wouldn't be able to carry a full 29 items. This makes sure that shulker boxes are still far superior.

I would also like to suggest backpacks not taking up any space in the inventory, but instead have their own slot like the shield/offhand and armor. Maybe, similar to the elytra, they take up the chestplate slot. You also shouldn't have to place a backpack to access its items, you should be able to access and organize the items in it while traveling.

Maybe if the backpack was crafted with 4 iron in the corners 4 leather and a chest in the middle that way it costs something and you could make it to where it holds 3-5 items no backpacks inside of backpacks and figure out a way to were you can only use one maybe have a backpack hot key that only opens the first backpack that comes in your inventory in till you empty it or put it in a chest or something

Shulker boxes can be placed down, but backpacks could be an inventory only item, in which case it still takes up a slot in your inventory. I guess it would be kind of redundant in some ways, but I'd like to see some sort of ability to pack on the go. Maybe updating the shulker boxes to where you can access them quickly. Shulker backpacks? I think one way to look at it is that adding backpacks for early game would probably undermine shulker boxes, but if you could combine them together to make, or upgrade, the backpack to have a lot more space, then I think it wouldn't undermine the shulker box anymore. It'd still have a good use.

I feel like we need backpacks for the following reasons:

    • They would be great for early-game extra inventory space
    • Donkeys are impractical and not always accessible
    • Shulker boxes are somewhat end-game items
    • It could be a way of accessing that extra storage (like items you'd carry in a shulker box) without having to change from your inventory to another block's inventory
    • It would give leather another use beyond books, item frames, and terrible armor

Well, if there are back packs, we can wear them as a chest plate but won't provide protection, will not break but can also put shulker boxes in them. Good idea?

I have never defeated the ender dragon.
An addition like this would be great early and mid game.

    • It should double the inventory

This would be a great mid game item before you get shulker boxes. It would take up the hefts plate slot like the elytra. People would use it often when mining or strip mining to gain more storage space out of it. It would be an option when opening your inventory to click on similar to the back packs on donkeys. They would store items when they are not equipped and when dropped would drop some of the items in them but as a chances to save a few (unless the backpack falls in lava).

Shulker boxes exist for a reason, you just have to play long enough to get them :P

Make it craftable, and apply to a new slot in the inventory menu. Backpack will not break over time. How about different sizes of backpacks? Small medium and large. The large backpack also slows you down slightly.

Backpacks would be useful, and could be an easier way to acquire something like a item similar to a shulker box.

To ensure that they’re not the same as shulker boxes, the heavier the backpack (more items), the slower you walk. This makes sure that you don’t want to wear the backpack 24/7, otherwise it would be just an permanent increase of your inventory size. I also think that it shouldn’t have as much itemslots as a chest, maybe 9 would be enough.

People seem to think that shulker boxes are backpacks. No they are not. They are glorified chests that can be broken with a piston and keep all their items inside. What we really want is an item that does not need to be placed down or removed from the inventory in order to access and manipulate the items stored inside. One other thing to note is that a backpack item would probably only be able to stow 9 slots worth of items. In addition to that, a backpack is a worn item. Can you wear a shulker box? No!

I agree your idea, despite of having many items inside the inventory, it must have a Backpack that doesn't need to place as a block.
