a severe sandstorm could also cause half-heart damage if you stay out for too long? it could also knock you around and slow down/speed up your walking speed depending on the direction you go.

Severe sandstorm could come with suffocation effect when outside. This effect could also linger a little even after player hides indoor.

Sand layers would be awesome! They have it in Minecraft Dungeons.

I presume a sandstorm would happen whenever it is raining/snowing everywhere else.

A suggestion for something that could introduce a sense of cohesion with other features would be an enchantment on the spyglass that allows it to be used to see through the reduced visibility. I think it could be cool.

yes! I have a desert buffet world and it would be great to have actual sand falling instead of having to weather my builds manually

It's a great suggestion and would make a unique way of farming sand. There is just one problem though that I am a bit concern and would want there to be a way to deal with. With snow, the snow accumulating could be stopped by adding some light sources in the area. How would there be a way to stop sand from accumulating?

I think this would give the desert more atmosphere

So, this would replace the 'nothing happens but the sky is darker' mechanic in deserts right now for when it rains or thunders? Because I think that would be pretty awesome.

It should mainly be an aesthetic change though, similar to how rain works. I would say, no extra terrain damaging events like tornados or something like that. Just lightning (as it is already in the game).

Extra Idea: After the severe sandstorms husks could appear around desert temples, awoken from their slumber by the storm.

If all it did was obscure vision, that would still be pretty cool. I think deserts should be a little bit difficult/dangerous to traverse, and this would be a step in that direction. Maybe the storm could also push entities a bit or randomly change their facing direction, making it even more difficult to navigate through them.

Rather than deposit sand on the ground, it could push it up against the sides of hills and structures, forming drifts/dunes. I don't think it necessarily has to drop new sand blocks at all, though.

The storm could also damage entities, as others have suggested, forcing players to seek or make cover. Or it could erode items with durability.

The sand who accumulate should have a short period of time, disappearing in the next few minutes after a sandstorm.

with the new deep dark coming in 1.19 and the warden having a darkness effect, the function of darkness is easily transferrable to this case of sandstorms in limiting visibility, possibly with a more of a sandy yellow-orange tinge to add to the atmosphere

I feel like this would feel very modded and there are already mods out there that add this to the game

That would help to fill in a desert that has already been stripped of sand

I think this is a good idea, deffo important since we need more weather in minecraft.

It would be interesting to see anyway, and hopefully it'll appear if mc decides to add more season anytime soon.

For those devs that say that the weather can destroy blocks, No, a sandstorm will be cool and even can be used to new mechanics like generation of sand, more difficult, mobs spawn often and exclusive mobs

Minecraft weather is something I’ve wanted for ages, but I wonder how it would be applied in game. The sand accumulation feature you mention would be very awkward in actual gameplay, and it’s the general concept of nature actually interacting with the world that usually kills weather. Still, even if it just adds visual features, this would be an excellent way to make these biomes more interesting.
