I think it would be funny if you leaded 4-5 bees and you slowly started to get lighter until you start floating up, but I don't think this should be a serious alternative to elytra or anything.

That is incorrect the metal to gem ratio is actually pretty much equal and if you consider lapis or amethyst to be gems there is actually more gems than metals.

I suggest the molten caves just be lava filled caved constructed of magma blocks and perhaps new heated stone blocks. I do not think new ores are necessary but perhaps diamonds could be more common...
