Some kind of grappling hook would really be awesome and usefull
I'm here after the new snapshot (20w15a) and with the new nether biome introduced it would help so much to have such an item.. The new biome looks really amazing but since there are a lot of cliffs it would be awesome to have an other way to travel through around..
I know you can use blocks and everything to just have a permanent way but this would seriously just destroy the amazing look of this biome with random bridges going everywhere..
Voted for this idea because now Mojang really needs to bring a grappling rope/grappling hook into the game it would make the experience much much better in the new biome!

Imo the grappling hook shouldn't create a permanent rope to travel it should rather pull you to your destination

I can totally understand why Mojang didn't put a grappling hook in the game yet because now when I really think about it it's a really complicated and hard item to make (if you want it to work very good and fluent)

Anyways thanks to everyone who red this 'till the end I wish y'all a very nice day and I hope this idea gets included in the game somehow

    -Smijo

(sorry for if some phrases aren't correct english is my second language please don't judge me)

It should be usable on only a crossbow like a special arrow.

It would be an excellent idea, especially for adventure maps, instead of programming a custom one using tridents and datapacks.

I want it too. This would serve as an alternative to ender pearls, and it would be easier to get.

This would be great to introduce into the Minecraft mountain update, especially with the mountains being more realistic. I do have an idea for the grapple rope what if the durability for it would depend on the ore type that you use for a pickaxe such as netherite haveing 50 uses and wood having 15 uses. Overall I love this idea and we need this

Maybe it could have more uses but needs to be made out of netherite and needs magma cream and an enderpearl as well

Maybe there could be a grappling enchantment for tridents so that when you throw it and it lands you could be transported to there. Like the opposite of loyalty

Minecract would definitely benifit from some kind of climbing rope. If you can throw it down it's more useful than ladders in a cave

I like the idea but I think it should be made with a bow lead and a arrow and should have more uses

I like this idea a lot, but I feel string does not cut it. We now have chains but that is too heavy of a line. The idea of rope has circulated, but until that comes about I think the best bet would be using leads (tangent: 1 rope could be made from 1 center lead & 2 string, like the chain). Here's the rest of my two cents:

Grappling Hook (GH) - 1 Pickaxe (any type, upper left of crafting grid) + 4 leads (top center & right side of grid)

    - A tool mainly used for climbing vertical cliffsides, swinging off a ledge, or catching yourself mid fall

-Will attach to surface or individual up to max mining distance

-When making contact, the distance of the line in between is set (if you hook a brick 3 blocks away, you have 3 blocks' worth of slack on the line)

-If you hit an individual, it acts like an attack dealing the damage of the pickaxe and the results follow (btw enchants on pickaxe wiped upon creation of GH)

    - Upon attaching to a surface, you can hold the 'use' button to climb the rope. Upon attaching to a mob, tapping will pull them towards you (get over here!!!!)

    - While hanging, you can rock yourself left and right up to 45 degrees of the GH. Selecting mine will disconnect GH.

    - Durability is based off of the pickaxe. You have to account for the initial 'hit' of the pickaxe colliding, the pulling of a mob, but most of all catching a fall. Depending on the material of the pickaxe, ideally it should be able to catch you 3 / 6 / 12 / 9 / 18 / 25 times before breaking.

Yes the grappling hook would a very useful and needed feature/item in the 1.17 mountain update to climb up those huge mountains. And I dont see why not.

I think I should go to 20 blocks because 16 is way to small and with the mountain update it will make exploring mountain way more fun

Hello! This is J RK. Since initially registering to MC Feedback I switched my tag for Xbox and found it did this reboot of my account. So, going from the former post and reading thus far there is one thing to note:

You do not want the Grappling Hook in the mainhand.

Roleplay: You are falling to your lava-sea doom when by luck you land a hit with the GH on an outstretch of a cliff or ceiling. You call it years of training hand-eye coordination techniques and honed reflexes. Either way you find yourself in a position where you are suspended above death with no ledge to jump/pull up to.

You want to have the ability to either break a block or place one. I know I used it as an example for an accessory (post pending, still an option though), but it should fit in the offhand. It makes sense with the scorpion pull-back (which you know sounds amazing against archers.)

Further, the rocking motion when in air cannot just be left and right, but maybe 8-wind compass rose. There is a lot to account for in making the self propelled rocking motion. It might be easier to have rocking in air based on lateral camera position & swing forward & behind. Falling is based on gravity & may have an arc to your swing vs just forward & back. To swing from a ledge without fall durability loss, you have to have your line taut (or almost) while somewhat sidestepping off the ledge; giving full swing & more easily determining physics. Failing to have a taut line results in a fall, with an empty swing.

I hit a roadblock. In realizing if the Grappling Rope is in the offhand, you need an offhand action; a button. Currently the only actions the offhand offers in Bedrock is moving the shield slightly when sneaking and view of held items when shifting the camera.

If I can flip 4 coins (2 on each thumb) and catch all 4, I can use my offhand for more than just holding.

It may be easier to have it used in the mainhand, but the argument of block building/breaking [to me] still stands. What do you all think? Mainhand and no block manipulation when Grapple is equipped or have it in the offhand with an offhand button devised?

(Button could be used to raise/lower shields too instead of sneak. If anything this change would mean the Dual wielding option is being revised for parity)

We would want more distance but like the idea.

    Anything else in mind?
Ex: with the grapple, should the rope arc (such as throwing rigging) or for easier development & operation work similar to a fishing rod?

Cool idea! Maybe it could latch onto certain blocks, and/or ledges, and when it latches onto something, the player can use the space bar/right shift to climb up/down the rope respectively.

I love your idea, however, it's not easy to find. As an harder exploration, it can only be found in dungeons. It could be crafted, but like a lead, you will need slime and 3 string. It could give you 4 rope at a time. 1 rope can reach 3 blocks away.

This would be absolutely incredible!!! This would be easier to get than ender pearls and you would be able to precisely aim where you want to well, grapple. It would also cause no damage. WE NEED GRAPPLING HOOKS IN MINECRAFT!!!

I would think when you throw it it latches on to a block and you tap it to un hook it. Also you would need to climb the rope to get up. I dont think it would work as ender pearls

I have just a small idea to add on, one that involves the use of a crossbow along with this "grappling rope' to truly liven up Minecraft! When one uses a crossbow to shoot a firework, they must hold said firework in their separate hand to essentially "load" it into the crossbow. The same concept should be introduced alongside this rope, with the player holding a crossbow in one hand and the rope in the other, allowing the tool to be loaded and then shot. I would say this doubles the range of block distance to say 32, due to the increased "power" or "force" behind the launch. Just a thought, reminds me of perhaps something Batman would use. Great idea!

@Spencer Schlitz I think that's an awesome way to implement it! You could then simply right-click with the crossbow to "break" the line and it'd drop, kinda like a lead, but directly onto your character.

Grappling hook: only attach to the top of blocks (space to climb, shift to descend).
Slimy grappling hook: same as the basic one except it can stick to all sides of a block.
Sticky grappling hook: same as the basic one except it can stick to entities (allowing you to do stuff like grappling to a ghast and swinging from under it).
Crosbow grappling hook: all hooks can be shot from a crosbow (like fireworks) to go further and faster.

The hook entity of the grappling hook should have a hitbox so you can break it as someone is climbing up

Also, there could be an enchantment to pull the player towards the hook automatically, like a grapple gun. The higher the level the faster the player is pulled and the more momentum they have

i like it but i would like it to have a skilled based mechanic like in titanfall 2 theres a grapple and you can slingshot yourself super fast but if its a clunky non skill based thing i wouldnt like it but i think a great skill based equipment would be the elytra so i think mojang would make it not clunky and terrible

Yeah, this idea should be in the cave and Cliffs Update. This would be perfect when mining
