maybe by using leads instead of string, you could make an upgraded variant that allows for a durability level similar to that of an Iron Hoe?

I would like it if it was permanent or had like 500 uses like the elytra and get repaired (the rope) with phantom skin plus iron ingot

Ender pearls are hard to get for a reason, and this would totally defeat the purpose. Also Minecraft isn’t that modern.

Maybe you could even attach a grappling hook to a crossbow

Mountains are being updated how about the way we climb the mountains. It would make sense to have grappling hooks in Minecraft. Not only would it be easier to climb mountains, but it would be easier to build tall structures in survival with out having to switch from survival to creative every time. To have a grappling hook in Minecraft would be amazing! I would feel like batman LOL!

What if you make rope from three-string and some honey?
Then, with the rope, you can make grappling hooks or maybe attach the rope to a bow/crossbow for long-distance effect!
It would be a useful crafting component too!

This should definitely happen but I prefer if it has 100 uses or more instead of 20.

This is a really cool idea but why 20

Don't want to be rude but doesn't that count as a gun? Because you're shooting the grappling hook.

This would go good with that new mountain update.

As a climber, I really love the idea of descending from the Nether ceiling into a fortress using a rope. However I would not limit ropes to 16 blocks, at least if you intend to use it to lower yourself like a speleologist.

Hanging from a very long rope, maybe even swinging, would be a very interesting experience, but descending a rope is a serious thing, you need brake or you'll hurt yourself very quickly. A braking device would be useful to avoid damages. Such device could be made from two tripwire hooks plus a string. Tripwire hooks have rings which could be recycled.

Perhaps ropes could be crafted from items different from strings, to make things more interesting. For example, from palm leaves, if palm trees are confirmed, or bamboo.

If you were to exchange the strings for a lead, this might be a less OP item, giving the player a slightly more difficult time to construct sed item and i would imagine it would function like throwing a trident, then you simply hold jump to climb towards the pick or hold shift to lower yourself down a casm.

Edit: as described by: Aethalia66 , the recipe should be an iron/diamond pickaxe, 1 lead and 2 tripwire hooks to seem more realistic.

It should also should be able to be repaired by string.

As people have been pointing out, ender pearls will become redundant for a lot of situations. Realistically, given the weight of the grapple hook's head matching a pickaxe, throw distance could be reduced to 2-4 blocks; for an easily accessible item like this that distance should be useful enough without replacing ender pearls. As well as this, I see comments on raising the hook's durability. Assuming it can recieve enchantments, effects of the unbreaking enchantment will make a more sturdy hook obtainable without being overly cheap.

This would be spectacular, especially with the new Nether and mountain updates, it would make exploring the three dimensional terrain of the nether and the improved mountains easier and much more interesting than just building staircases all day long

It should work like a fishing rod but it would hold yousonyou can hang to a bridge and spider man along, this would be great for parkour. They should also make it so you can use a lead and tie it to a fence post and you can hang off of it and gain momentum.

Crossbow + Trident would be a fair but awesome way to do it, since tridents have riptide and crossbows can be preloaded, y'know it makes sense

I've got an idea for this related to the Nether update.

I'm thinking that, as a new form of transportation, there could be a Netherite grappling hook.

It would be made out of Netherite ingots and weeping vines.

When thrown from the hand it could act as sort of a reverse lead, possibly allowing the player to tie it off and climb it. (right right clicking would pull it back to you)

Its real strength, however, would be from using it with a Crossbow. When loaded into a Crossbow, you'd be able to fire it far and quickly, and right clicking would pull the player towards the block it connected with.

With the crossbow you'd also be able to quickly pull certain mobs, and maybe items, towards you as well.

I do not think something like this would be OP because for one thing, I see no way it'd be better than flying, and it wouldn't negate fall damage or anything like that, so it'd still be dangerous. (especially in the Nether, where I'm imagining it could be very useful)

This is a great idea! I have a mobile game called Ark survival evolved and there are grappling hooks that you attach to crossbows. I think it would be good to use the grappling rope like an arrow that you can collect.

Hope this gets added to Minecraft! 🤞

With some wood, you can create a "tube" where put the grappling rope to create a grappling gun, wich go farther ana can be enchanted

I love this idea. I feel like this is especially relevant with the upcoming mountain generation coming. maybe even something that lets you climb up walls like a spider would work, an ice pick or something, its not op because we already have elytra, but just something to make exploration a little more fun, and to stop that annoying moment where you have to break one block to get over a ledge

I think a better name would be, "grappling pickaxe", to feel more minecraft-y... you know? If it was called this, a pickaxe would be part of its recipe.

This is one of my favorite ideas for Minecraft. I think it needs some improvements though. First, it should have a longer range (maybe 20-25 blocks?). Second, it should have WAY more uses. Third, you should be able to use it to pull entities toward you.

Good idea, trying to traverse the Nether in the snapshots is a bit daunting to say the least.

An idea for the recipe: Iron Pickaxe (I)+ Lead (L) + Iron Ingot (F) + String (S) x2 = Grappling Hook

    Arranged like this

    [I] [S] [_]

    [_] [L] [_]

    [_] [S] [F]

Rationale: Iron pick provides the gripping device, like OP's idea from 2 years ago. Lead is the rope; uses a rope-like item already present in game and an item that can be hard to source at times. Iron ingot is the counter-weight, String holds it together.

Function: Increase the durability to be in line with that of a stone hoe, 100 +/-15 uses. Range should be 5 to 15 blocks, depending on charge level (works like a bow, holding right click will charge until fully charged, releasing RMB launches the hook). Each successful grapple drains durability by 1 to 3 depending on charge; unsuccessful grapples drain no durability.

Mob Interaction: Perhaps allow the grappling hook to drag entities into the player, would cost 3-9 durability depending on charge if successful. Otherwise the interaction would be a knockback effect to clear an area of entities for successful attachment.

As for people saying that Ender Pearls already do this; you're right, they do. However, Ender Pearls are consumable, have a near instant use time, harm the player on landing, can spawn Endermites, and require hunting Endermen to have any reasonable amount lying around. In my estimation, there's nothing wrong with having a dedicated tool for a basic movement need.

And create Rope, then to restock the Grapple you need to combine the two in a crafting table. Rope can also be attached to two objects at a time, they can attach to fence, iron bars, boats and mine-carts
An entity cannot pass through the rope and could be used to trap animals and other mobs
