OK, it's been over a year since supposedly the development team has prioritised this feature. It's safe to say that was a lie.

PAUSE. It's such a basic feature. We really aren't asking for much. The ability pause the game. Like literally every other single player game. It really is mind boggling that this thread even exists. It's incredible. Words cannot describe my disappointment. Such a simple thing, and while they implement loads of things no one ever asked for, they can't implement the most basic of all features. Infuriating.

I'm considering getting a refund, because this game is such a pain to play. Instead of pressing a single button to tend to whatever else I need to tend to immediately, and then just a button press to hop back in... No, I need to save & quit, losing the visual context of what the hell I was doing, and then having to wait a good half a minute the next time I want to jump in for the world to load. It is basically unplayable. It is the reason I played it for only 25 hours over a year despite being very much into the game only a few years ago.

And there's no communication about this whatsoever. Zero. Like the most basic feature does not matter at all. Do these developers even play their own game?? I cannot believe they do. I'm pretty sure they only play the Java edition. There's no other sensible explanation for this lack of the most basic feature of all games, otherwise they would understand how infuriating this is.

Would really like to know what's going on with this as this is the most basic feature anyone wants in a  single-player experience.

Especially because Bedrock is what's being ported to the other platforms, some of which are supposed to be mobile.

I have a dog. I don't want to just quit every time I have to take him out. I have a son, I dont want to quit just because he needs a change or I have to go make him food or something.

Essentially what you're saying is Java edition is what you want to play if you have any responsibilities at all.

    We need a real pause.

I post this as the official response was almost exactly a year ago... Why is this not a thing yet?!? It shouldn't take a year to (not) implement a simple but crucial feature for single player! I don't want to have to choose between dying or getting off my train at the right station. >_> Even if you just stop the game from running in the background when you go back to the Switch's home. I notice it has to reload when you go back into it anyway. Please hurry up with this fix. For now I'm going back to Java.

Genuinely makes the game unplayable to me. I play games a little at a time due to health conditions, a few minutes, pause and rest, a few minutes, pause and rest. Devs, Why was this even considered acceptable in the first place? Video Games are not life, there's no reason we shouldn't be able to pause single player, there's no reason this should have been released without a pause feature, and there's no reason it should have taken this long to implement.

So they can add foxes, structure blocks, and a village overhaul... But not a basic/essential feature that not only appeared in the Java edition, but also Console as well.

My god how are you guys not noticing this?!

Just downloaded Minecraft Switch Edition and I have been a fan of Minecraft since 2012. I've played it on Mac, PS4, and iOS; all which of course had a pause function...

This is the first time I have had a very negative Minecraft experience over the lack of one of the most basic features in gaming. I am incredibly confused as to why this edition of Minecraft does not have the ability to pause a singleplayer world.

I know it's prioritized, but if this doesn't get implemented soon for Switch, I'm just going to delete the game and give up on it. It is effectively useless without the ability to pause. I have neither the time nor the patience to backtrack to safe zones or use other workarounds for pausing in the game.

Bad. Ps4 edition just updated to bedrock, and now i cant pause the game!
    This is so annoying.
I have a newborn, being able to pause a game for me is very helpful.

Came to check if I'm able to play Minecraft on Switch yet or not, guess the answer is still no. Can I please have a refund?? I haven't been able to play this game since I bought it 1+ years ago. I hesitate to even call pause a feature, as a busy guy with a full life I'm literally unable to play this game without it. This sucks.

Over a year has passed since this was put on “priority”. I’ve been playing Minecraft for years since Alpha, but just recently started playing again on the PS4 for a couple months now, and love the world I’ve built in survival.

PS4 just updated to Bedrock edition, and now pausing does not work in my single player world. I now have to play in peaceful mode, so I don’t have to worry about getting marked every 5 seconds by the already over-spawning enemies.

This is absolutely ridiculous, why would you take away the ability to pause the game? One of the most basics features of video games since the 1970’s, it’s like they forgot 40 years of gaming history.

Maybe Microsoft doesn’t want the game paused so they can collect all that sweet sweeet data from users. Really disappointing stuff from Mojang.

EDIT: Thankfully the PS4 version allows you to still access the “Edition” version, which allows me to play the old update. Doesn’t fix the Bedrock problem, but at least I can keep playing my world with pausing

I'd love this on the PS4 version of the game. Even going to the PS4 home menu doesn't pause the game.

Please. PLEASE. We need this...Java parity, if nothing else.

I don't understand why I can't pause. I've been playing minecraft since alpha 1.2 and even then when you hit escape on the keyboard, the menu screen paused the game. Now, playing on ps4 edition, post bedrock update, hitting options pulls up the menu but doesn't pause the game, where it would before bedrock update for ps4.
I just spent hours mining and ended up losing half a stack of diamonds on hard mode because of this.

Incredibly stunning. Here I thought Mojang was almost a respectable company. I can't wait for the second year to pass since this issue was made a "priority," and for Mojang to release the $5 "pausing DLC".

It's quite frustrating that "pausing" the game or leaving the app on Android doesn't stop the game itself. Just like any other game, it's just a kind of leisure activity, something that you can't simply turn off the rest of your life to spend time playing it; there ARE other things that will distract you and keep you from playing. So you should be able to temporarily stop in-game from progressing while you finish other business, so that you can just continue afterwards without having lost any daytime or having been blown up by a creeper in the background.

Also a more personal note, I'm really salty about this because a dolphin came onto land swimming after me, and i left to send a screenshot to a friend, but meanwhile the dolphin suffocated and died D: pls fix

Unbelievable that this still hasn't been addressed on bedrock. I guess I will never buy Minecraft for the Switch and have to accept that I can't play anything but peaceful on Android.

There are tons of multiplayer games where you can "freeze" the game with server console commands.

I understand that it's implemented in such a way that it's a multiplayer game even if it is set to "offline", but it should be trivial to stop "processing frames" on the "server" side, if the code is not structured horribly.

So this makes me kind of worried that we're not seeing any update 2 years later. I'm worried that it's a fucking spaghetti, and we'll never see this feature.

I only play offline, and the inability to actually pause is IDIOTIC!

BRING BACK THE PAUSE BUTTON, AND THE OPTION TO DISABLE AUTO-SAVE!

I haven't once heard in my life of a game where the developers decided to take away an existing pause function and then pretend like pausing is actually the hardest feature in the world to implement and instead bees are so more important.

If multiplayer is set to off than it should pause the game, It's been almost 2 years since this post was created and it still isn't a feature. The nether update is about to come out, please let us pause the game.

Please add pausing to the game! It's one of the oldest game features of all time, there's no reason to take it out

It is something that should be trivial to program in.

If <pause_key> is pressed then open pause menu.

If gamemode = online is false, then <pause_key> pauses game.

Something like that. I am no coding guru.

It's been like this since day one of Pocket Edition's existence, it's about time that ends. What if I need to go to the bathroom? What if I am checking discord after receiving a notification.

And don't you dare tell me this "limitation is by design" because that is the saddest excuse a company can make for a feature's absence. Nobody else is playing with me, so I should be allowed to pause, it's been like this for decades. I remember that not being able to pause really made me upset when playing Pocket Edition (which I have played since it first released on IOS), and seeing it not solved after almost a decade really shows you something about Mojang; they don't care about what people want, they care about what THEY themselves want, that's no way to live.

I agree.  In Java, I can pause by bringing up the menus. I frequently like/need to pause my game for a little while and it's irritating that I have to shut down my game just to stop for less than a minute to a few minutes only to risk getting my character killed.  This is just ineffective and I can't believe that  it's never been implemented.

I think it is because of the multiplayer settings in your world, you could be playing a multiplayer game and without knowing it because multiplayer is default on bedrock and without requiring 2 or more people to play (yet takes all of the multi out of it.) If this is not it, then I can't help you except vote this idea.

You can turn off multiplayer and it still won't pause.

Maybe adding an option to toggle autopause would be useful with this as well!
