This sound's really intriguing! I would actually like to see this added to the game. But maybe they could make ancient tunnels through the volcano that has treasure at the end! Like a bridge that goes right over the lava inside the volcanoe! This way you don't know when the volcano will erupt making you want to get off the bridge and to the treasure! The treasure would give the player some incentive to want to go in the volcano!

Would the ground be made of basalt

Cooled lava is just obsidian... when lava is cooled it makes obsidian in minecraft and real life... also when it's raining in other biomes you could have falling ash in this one. Maybe a natural spawning temple or cave ruin with a nether portal to take you to a dimension that is basically one giant volcano. (the nether...)

Volcanic ERUPTIONS would be too laggy. But volcano biomes are a great idea.

Volcanos should only spawn in the ocean, to make it more tropical

It would be like a little portion of the nether in the overworld, except for the terrain materials; but would be nice too that magma stone would be included like it does in deep underwater 12Y caves. I think it would be much harmonious rather now where there's just one single lava source block in hills biomes and it doesn't looks amazing, it's just a glowing mountain dropping lava.

Now this suggestion made me expectant.

Volcanoes in real life don't just occur on land, they also occur under water. So a volcano in game would be a rare natural structure occurring in any biome, even in the ocean. Volcanic underwater wouldn't necessarily seem like a volcano unless you check the biome, so if it erupted it would a surprise.

Volcanoes can be made up of various types of volcanic rock, including basalt, obsidian, andrisite, ect. Plus adding basalt to the game would add a type of black rock to the game, as we currently only have obsidian, black terracotta, and concrete.

Volcanic eruptions can be a particle effect shooting out molten rocks and clouding the sky with dense smoke. The rocks will turn into a volcanic rock type if they happen to land in water and will not cause fires ( or volcanic fire could be an optional setting ). If you go up the volcano and get into the smoke, or are high enough up in a volcano biome you will get a volcanic smoke debuff that will poison you. Smoke would not occur underwater and getting hit with volcanic rock would do a half heart of damage. On land volcanic rock would cause 1 heart of damage.

If you want lava flows, then any unmined blocks hit with a volcanic rock will turn into lava. It would be similar to how leaves do not decay after being sheared.

I see some people have suggested this is too much like the nether...I disagree, since it is NOT the nether. A mountain that spews lava in the over-world would be cool, and dangerous, which would be great! Love this idea.

a cooled lava block is litterly obsidian but it could be cool expect for the fact that other than snow and villages its the nehter

There are plenty of Minerals, Crystals and Stones that are forming in volcano walls, below them, surface where Lava is spreading, or in Lava itself so if this update ever made into the game Im expecting at least to add new Minerals, Crystals and Stones, geologist would be happy tho

What if Husks and Ash-like mummy-zombies spawned there? Blazes could too, but that might cause progression issues.

You could stick volcanoes on groupings of tropical islands, near jungles maybe.  Maybe could also be in mountainous biomes.  They could be some sort link between the nether and the overworld, possibly releasing lava from like the nether, as long as other nether materials.  They could be constructed mainly out of black terracotta.  Of course, the structure could be a large mountain with a pool of lava near the top, or spilling over the edge creating streams of lava that fall from down to the base of the mountain.  Obsidian could spawn pretty much anywhere on the mountain, especially nearby lava that has reached the bottom of the mountain.  I think the use of magma would add be a good idea.  Maybe it could be found at the top of the mountain primarily, but a little bit in the middle and lower regions would be nice as well.  Going back to the nether link idea, you could use soul sand as ash, and incorporate netherrack as possibly what lines the inside of the volcano.  Since the nether portal is made of obsidian and fire, this biome could easily be what gets you into the nether.  Maybe you could stick diamond ore somewhere inside the volcano, but harvesting it would come with risk as you could easily be killed in the lava.  As for basalt, I guess a new block would be cool.  It would probably be re-colored endstone that is just black.  Maybe stick some dead trees at the basin.  You could incorporate villages made out of nether brick and quartz.  Just a list of ideas.  IDK.

If it were just for new building blocks, such as basalt or ash, I'd be inclined to agree with this idea, as it would give you a reason to find volcanoes (and it'd add to the diversity/variety in the world), but as it currently stands, I'm not a personal fan of of it being implemented in the intricate way you describe.

I believe this would be a very cool idea it would almost be as if it was a Pompeii biome where the volcano erupts and theres a village at the bottom.

And make diamonds be more common in this biome. They should be at the same level as iron ore.

maybe when you've entered the biome, small bits of ash can be falling to the ground, like snow flakes in snow biomes

Instead of "cooled lava" which cobblestone already occupies, a black rock (basalt) can constitute a volcano. It adds a building block to the black color palette, which lacks availability and variety as it stands. Slabs, stairs, polished and chiseled variants could also be cool.
