Hey there! We're a Mac & Linux household, and we love the Java edition, and run our own server. But we'd also really like to enjoy the cross-platform play of the Bedrock engine. I'm sure it would also be really nice for you all not to have to maintain the Java codebase as well.
Or -- at least add cross-platform play to the Java Edition.

With the announcement of Project Catalyst which provides numerous tools to allow iOS-built apps to be easily recompiled to run on macOS, I think this availability request is worth talking about again. Now's the perfect time to look into porting the Bedrock engine to macOS, which is becoming more and more like iOS, and iOS already supports the game. Additionally, after Apple transitions all their notebook and desktop products to their own Silicon chips, there will be no excuse for not having a port; those chips literally run iOS apps natively! If the concern is over Microsoft wanting exclusive ownership, well, that just doesn't make sense. There's a whole market out there asking for a macOS port, and with the tools mentioned above, a port should be far from difficult. Hell, there was a version available for Apple's TV for some time, but not macOS? The Education Edition is available for Mac and runs on the Bedrock engine, but the base game isn't available? It just doesn't make sense.
So this is kind of delayed but you could always use windows 10 bootcamp for mac, but that problem will also be fixed if you don't want to because apple stated that in Q3/Q4 of 2020 they will release an arm base mac. arm is the same cpu base used in apple phones and apple stated that you will be able to run all ios and iPadOS apps on there unless the dev agrees to pay a monthy fee to keep there app of the app store. it doesn't look like mojang would opt out especially because the play store version of minecraft is available on chromebooks with keyboard and mouse support.
Especially with Macs getting ARM-based chips, and Mojang already have Minecraftt working on iOS, making it for macOS is just copy, paste, and remove some buttons. It would be the same even without Apple silicon, but with it it's much easier - in fact it will be automatically available in the Mac app store if Mojang doesn't specifically set an option.
For Linux - It's another thing. We have the Minecraft Bedrock Linux launcher, which just emulates Android (lol). Minecraft Bedrock is in C++, so I don't understand why it's so DIFFICULT to just make it for macOS/Linux!
If I could ask anything of Minecraft developers, it would be this. Bedrock needs to be available on Mac. All of my friends play on Bedrock, and I am stuck with only Java on my MacBook Air. Mac users should be able to choose between Java or Bedrock, like on windows 10. The other option would be to allow cross play between Java and Bedrock, but since each version has exclusive features, it probably wouldn’t work for cross play. When the “Better Together” update was added, it shouldn’t have excluded Macs.
As a now Windows player (previously on a Mac) I would have appreciated to be able to play with all my friends who don’t know the difference between java and bedrock editions. Bedrock can also perform much better and would likely be welcome to people using MacOS because it’s just not for gaming. Many family computers are macs too and Microsoft would hit another huge demographic of families and students.
This would be huge, I anticipate that the reasons for not having bedrock on mac are varied, but it would be great to be able to run bedrock on MacOS.
Hopefully Big Sur will lead to forced compatibility, since you can just play the iOS version on MacOS, but still, would be great to actually have access to a bedrock made for MacOS.
I had to post a comment because someone was so grotesquely wrong, I needed to correct it.
macOS IS NOT BUILT ON TOP OF LINUX. It's built on top of BSD. One is an OS designed to perfectly emulate Unix. One is ACTUALLY UNIX.
Second - Microsoft is being extremely lazy about this. Porting from openGL 2 -> Metal has been done. Lots. There's no excuse for there not to be a Bedrock edition for macOS other than Microsoft sucks as a group of individuals - not their products - as people.
Honestly having Minecraft on my mac would be a dream as I really want to play with my friends better and access things like Hypixel as well as get better at PVP as I think mobile controls are great but fighting is kinda wonky so pls Mojang pls add Minecraft bedrock addition for mac
Given that you can run the Android version in Linux using MCPE Launcher, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to do. Unfortunately, it often means you can't run the latest (because it takes time to catch up) and that means no realms.
I'm trying to set up a gaming league with my son and some friends but this is stopping me from using Bedrock because there are some linux users. I'd love to support the wider ecosystem of devices that bedrock does, but I can't.
Do it. Now.
I do not support it as I have had bad expereances with bedrock edition, for example it takes forever to load, the UI is garbage and crossplay is a joke. also bedrock ruined minecraft on the consoles by removing liked features like the minigames, replacing them with laggy servers that crash every five seconds. and removing the fun tutorial world and replacing it with nothing! besides java has much more features like furnace minecarts, the debug stick, and petrified wood.
Though honestly it doesn't really matter to me as I only play old versions of minecraft PE (anything that has the nether reactor) and java 1.12.2 as anything newer crashes my core 2 duo macbook from 2009.
though if it does get added to mac, I do hope they don't remove java edition or i will have to take my macbook off the internet forever.
Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I have desperately been wanting bedrock on Mac. I host a realm on xbox and I love it, but i’m always wanting to have the option to play on mac. Building is easier on mac, and I always loved the feeling of playing java. I just love having the cross comparability of Bedrock, despite it not being supported by MacOS
