Update: Powder snow has now released as part of Caves & Cliffs Part I.

One of the coolest new features to arrive in Caves & Cliffs Part I, powder snow introduces fun new mechanics to experiment with as well as hazards to be wary of: 

  • Mobs inside a block of powder snow start to freeze and eventually take damage 
  • Players can protect themselves from powder snow by equipping leather armor 
  • Cauldrons fill up in snowy weather, creating a renewable source of powder snow. It will also generate naturally in certain snowy biomes when Caves & Cliffs: Part II releases
  • Buckets can be used to scoop up and place powder snow 
  • Most mobs cannot walk on powder snow and fall into the block instead 
  • Skeletons transform into strays after standing in powder snow for awhile
  • Wearing Leather Boots allows a player or mob to walk on Powder Snow without falling in

    this update is great i love the idea of sinking into the ground cant do a thing about it then die and lose all youre stuff nice real nice.

    Please for the love of all that is holy make it possible to get out while on horseback. Sure make it slow or something but gravel is already bad enough. Don't give us a evil twin to the most hated block in minecraft. Thanks

    Please make the default texture of powder snow a greater contrast to regular snow. People with vision disabilities have a very difficult time seeing the difference between regular snow and powder snow. Not being able to see the powder snow makes traversing the snowy biomes not as fun (like "mob griefing" but for a biome). Leather boots are still a viable tool but with a new texture there is a chance to at least see and avoid the obstacle.
