I want to make a Realm subscription but I will never do so if the render distance isn't able to be changed client-side. It can START at 10, sure that's fine. That way Mobile users can just hop in and not worry about it. But if I'm trying to MANUALLY set my render distance higher as a CLIENT then I should be able to do that.

Already if somebody were to just JOIN my server while I'm playing (Mobile users, Xbox users, PC users) the render distance is whatever THEY have set because it's client based. There shouldn't be any reason why this isn't the case for realms. I refuse to purchase until this is set, and I WANT to purchase it. I want my friends and I to be able to play a server without ONE player ALWAYS being online.

I decided to just host my own server which is pretty easy with Windows 10. 32 Chunk render distance and I set the sim distance to 8 from 4. Works great - dropping my realms sub

I think that offering such a bad offer for such money is a joke. Microsoft, what do we pay for? That's not why we play rock ground, which has much better optimization than Java to see the world in the fog. We should have the right to decide how far we can see exactly how much you pay 7 pounds, if in return we get quality at a modest level?

While the render distance is not a dealbreaker for me because I’m used to having weak hardware, it is kinda annoying. I would settle for 16.

As someone else mentioned, the intended mechanic of flying is unusable in the End. I've mistakenly flown into the void thinking I was barely tilted a few times when I first started a Realm. By the time you realize your angle, it is often too late. Ridiculous. Switch cannot even handle a world download above 300 or so MB, so downloading it onto your Switch to play offline is not an option.

After reading some comments here, I think I'm going to just use my office PC to run my world 24/7 and just join that through the friends list. Sounds great, and it will be free. Thanks for the suggestion, guys!

I too am very disappointed in the view distance being locked in to a value so low. I will not be renewing my realms plus  subscription due to this.

My suggestion: either allow the render distance to be configurable, or dynamic based on number of players. If this cannot be achieved, then offer a premium tier with beefier servers that can handle it.

I usually play Minecraft with render distance at 48, but I wanted to be able to play with all of my friends without being online all of the time. Minecraft Realms is amazing! But it's upsetting to see that the render distance ruins most of the game play. We should be able to choose what our setting is we shouldn't just be stuck using the lowest possible render distance all of the time. My friends and I are starting to get bored of the realm just because of this flaw, and I will be canceling the subscription soon.

The simulation and render distance should also be allowed to increase in both Realms and normal solo/multiplayer worlds, though a limit according to that device’s capabilities and storage should be in placed to lower crashes and lag spasms or remove them entirely.

The render distance is a joke. We pay good money to be able to play with friends, but no one told me about the limitation I would have. I though this was normal Minecraft, but no. The End is a no go zone apparently, Mojang should just remove it, you can’t see anything.. Elytra is useless. The is no end game for Realms. Make us be able to edit it ourself. If it laggs by setting it too high then it’s fine, we can adjust accordingly to how many players we have playing/ devices we play on. By being the most selling game stretching over two generations I expected much better from Microsoft.

$10 CAD a month for 12 chunks? I don't see why, my phone can perfectly render 32 why can't the server. I'd get rid of all the bonus content for an extra couple chunks easily.

Increase the render distance for the realms, 7 dolars for that?

I totally understand that this is a limit designed to reduce server load but realms are a PAID feature. They should be getting the red carpet rolled out to them as they are bringing in the money for Mojang/Microsoft.

Even if you have whatever it is now as the default but allow users to increase it. I guarantee that the majority of users would not touch the option and that the server load would not increase dramatically. It would give the best of both worlds.

Bit of a joke this still hasn't been sorted. If it's not something you can do, allow Xbox players ect to connect to dedicated servers. End of.

This doesn't even necessarily have to be a server based fixed, the client could cache known chunks and display them in the distance, so while exploring new chunks would be limited, being in the existing parts of the world could still be immersive!

I would say that 16 chunks would be the ideal render distance because a render distance too high causes people with high end devices to have an advantage over people with low end devices. Currently, most low end devices such as phones and most computers with integrated graphics support to a max of 16 chunks rendering.

I have paid for a Realm for my kids and I to play on twice. The first time we just messed around with basic builds and the poor render distance definitely bothered me as I was coming from the Java edition but my kids were o.k. with it. The second and most recent time they have progressed far enough in their gaming abilities to want to challenge the Ender Dragon and explore the End.

I hope this doesn't sound hyperbolic but the End is literally unplayable on Realms. The render distance is so short that exploration is impossible. After bridging out into the middle of nothing several times hoping to find an End City I resorted to cheating - I downloaded our world and logged in to the local copy so I could just see what was right in front of our faces! That got us to an End City, but does nothing for further exploration of the End.

TLDR; End is unplayable on Realms.

just got realms having the same feeling

how can a paid experience be so limited

    4 chunk simulation distance?

    world covered in fog?

It's be cheaper just to run my minecraft server when we want to play and suck it up and use our computers over mobile consoles

bedrock is well optimised we shouldn't have to put up with this in 2020

My friend and I build a pyramid that can be seen from our house across a huge river. When upload the world to realms i cant even see anything unless i move a lot closer. the render distance is really killing my vibe. Please fix this. I have been playing Minecraft since 2009 before there were any stairs in the game. I pay 4$ a month and the render distance is trash. Please fix.

I comment in the hope to bring more attention to this issue.

As other people have complained, the low render distance in realms is claustrophobic, easy to get lost in, and becomes an obstacle to seeing one's creation and the beautiful landscape of the game.

This last point is what I see most makes the low setting a fallacy. The low render distance is so sloppy because it is inconsistant with the major themes of the game, creativity and exploration. This is poor design, and poor design results in a poor user experience.

Especially when Realms Plus appears to be one of the major selling points of the game on its website. As it stands Realms is largely a compromise, a trade off on the essential gameplay experience of Minecraft for being able to play with friends in different locations.

I hope the design team, or the people who make these big picture decisions sees this thread.

    From a pationately dissatisfied customer.

Please, FIX THIS. People running the game on different consoles can adjust their render distance as needed for their console, but why in the world are people playing on powerful PC's being limited to the chunk distance standard on a phone?

It's ridiculous to pay $7 a month for a realm and then not be able to see 90% of it in the distance. My PC can handle it. Quit handicapping realms subscribers.

i was interested in realms until i saw the render distance.  what a nightmare.  i'd rather dedicate a computer and just run it 24/7.  jesus.

This is unacceptable. I’m hosting on PC that can do 128 chunks in a regular lobby. How come in a realm, that we pay for, it is limited to so little, at least give us options or make it at least 48+

I just started the free trial but, due to this issue, I won't subscribe after it ends. The visible fog itself is quite annoying.

I'm not sure if Microsoft realizes this or not, but the low render distance makes the game virtually unplayable and it IS LOSING THEM CUSTOMERS!

So this is an utter joke. The fact that this has been an ongoing issue for YEARS and is clearly a major issue affecting a lot of people and there still hasn't been any notable response from Mojang aside from "it's working as intended" is a disservice to the community and more so completely disrespectful to the people who pay money for this service.

Your silence on this issue that undermines several core elements of this game that is needed to play. As many people have pointed out, there are numerous solutions to the issue no matter the limitations. The fact that nothing has been done about it for years is absurd.

    Solutions range from -
    - having render distance be scalable to each user, in relation to their local hardware.
    - Having the option to set render distance and hardware compatibility to the realms owner.
    - caching local chunks on the outskirts of the render field
    - have the render distance scale with player count.

Honestly this is inexcusable. Apparently one of the only customer bases that pays a monthly fee to Mojang is completely ignored by said studio. What backwards logic is that? There aren't even any reasonable excuses or explanations, not even a "we're working on it" or "we recognise this is an issue".

You're working on ray tracing for the next gen consoles and PC, yet suitable render distance to make the game even PLAYABLE is on the backburner?!?

This is a major issue for the realms community and it SHOULD be an issue for you as well.

The default 10 chunks makes it so underwhelming to create big things. We’ve been working on our Realm for years and our very sad that this setting hasn’t been changed yet. Pulls us away.
