I just got a realm and i already regret it after seeing this render distance. How am I supposed to explore and find ocean monuments etc when i can't even see 100 blocks infront of me!?

Agreed, this makes end city exploring extremely difficult because when I explore 20k+ blocks and find about 10 end cities, I guarantee I passed at least another 10 that I couldn’t see because the render distance

Yeah I just started the free trial, and I am not going to be continue it past that trial.  Honestly, I could get past not being able to see farther, but to know that any farms or anything else that I build are not going to function past such a short distance....yeah, sorry...that's ridiculous.

Just started a test realm yesterday, and was very confused to see mountains that weren't that far away simply dissappeared from sight. Coming from single player worlds, this is just unplayable and completely destroys the experience. I don't know who came up with the idea that it would be acceptable to charge us 7 euros a month for this nonsense, but that person is in dire need of a reality check.

I'll obviously not be paying for the subscription after the trial period ends, because it's simply not worth the money. Xbox Live and Playstation Plus cost less than Realms, yet they can't even give us a decent draw distance? Where is all that money going then?

I'm sorry to say this but Minecraft Realms feels like a scam, and i'm pretty disgusted that they think this is even remotely acceptable.

    Part 1:

I played Minecraft starting around 2011 and went through a lot with this game. I took a long break, but have recently returned to the game with a few friends. Two of my friends have the game on Switch and I have always had it on PC. We started playing where I hosted a world and it was great fun, but my friends couldn't play unless I was online and hosting the game. Due to when I bought Minecraft, I was granted a copy of the Windows 10 edition which is what I've been using in order to play with my friends on the Switch.

Last night, I started the Realms free trial and was quickly disappointed with the render distance. The world we spawned in was a big ocean world with a bunch of little islands. Before connecting the world to realms, I could see islands in the distance, a large ice biome over the ocean and lots of interesting things underwater. After uploading to the Realm, all I can see is the sun setting underwater. Playing before uploading to realms I had the ability to take a boat to an island I saw in the distance. Upon arriving, I was able to look around and spot a village to the South, along with another village beyond that once arriving. After uploading to Realms, I am unable to see these landmarks from the same distance.

    Part 2:

After looking up how to increase the render distance, I found that it was impossible to do so in Realms, which is why I am here now, submitting feedback to fix this issue. Support has come out to say that the render distance is "working as intended" but if that's intended, they are essentially saying they intend for the game to be broken. Per the exploring example above, the low render distance negatively affects gameplay. Players cannot efficiently explore the world without being able to see past a couple hundred blocks. I've read some of the other posts here where the low render distance prevents the game from loading blocks at a certain distance and has broken a players' sorting machine. There are also players that can't even see their friends' houses due to the limitations and quitting realms.

I am playing on a powerful PC, with the ability to set the render distance up to 80 chunks. Players should be able to control their own render distance depending on the device limitations. A Switch would be less powerful than my PC, so each should have their own control. Similar to playing before realms, I should be able to see at a decent distance in order to play the game as intended, reaching back to 2011, or 2014 when players could see at a decent distance and play the game as intended.

    Part 3:

Render distance is a pretty substantial part of the Minecraft experience. Going back to 2011 when I was just starting out, you could easily get lost if you couldn't navigate via landmarks in the landscape. Render distance allowed the player to see larger creations, or the "craft" part of Minecraft. As mentioned above, render distance affects exploration in a big way. Before uploading to realms, I was able to seek out villages, but after Realms, could not see these landmarks at the same distance. I had to row out into the ocean to see the first ice island and once I got to that point, I couldn't even see my home island anymore. It's terrible for navigation and a broken mechanic. "Working as intended" is simply broken.

As a result of this, I am having second thoughts about keeping the Realms service. We will feel out the free trial and go from there. Paying $8 a month for a lesser experience than playing for free doesn't make any sense. The only benefit is the always on mechanic where anyone can get on without the host, but does it make more sense for me to just keep my game running at home if one of my friends wants to play that day?

    Part 4:

As much as I'd like to keep a Realm for that always on mechanic, the render distance is a broken mechanic, not working as intended. No matter how many times you say it's working as intended, I don't believe the low render distance is intended because otherwise the base game would have that same low render distance. If this issue gets resolved, I will consider retaining a subscription to realms, but paying for a lesser experience does not make any sense.

End (Why did this get put at the top?)

    Just to update
Despite this issue being brought up a year ago there has still been no change.
I cancelled my realms subscription and run  my own server.
The always on functionality does not justify the game basically not working.

The render distance reduction is the only reason i hate realms, i love building tall building and exploring so that i can see my work from a very far distance, i also love not having to wait for someone to be online to enjoy that together but the render distance reduction makes realms useless for the way i like to build and play minecraft, there's no point in having a tall building with a good viewpoint if you cant see far.

I don't think having to pay more for this is a good idea either, i dont understand why i can see 80 chunks on someone elses world but not on a realm

Just started a new realm, Was immediately disappointed, render distance is no where near as good as it should be.  Not being able to see the ground from the sky due to render distance being poor is not acceptable.

Yes, this is very disappointing. If the draw distance was increased to that of the old standard, I'd buy copies for the whole family on any platform. Friends included. Simulation distance should also be increased, but render distance is more of a priority imo. I understand that it needs to work with PE, but the software can be optimized per console capabilities. Just a matter of time. Until then, I'm sticking to java.

Not to mention, the soundtrack barely ever plays, the rain isn't audible, and the thunder doesn't sound like thunder. What's going on there?

Mere words cannot express how simply unacceptable this is. "Working as intended" is this some kind of sick joke? some sort of perverse fallout 76 beta thing to be fixed later? I don't care, you couldn't pay me a full time jobs wages to play on one of these things, seriously in a game which is solely about creating visuals, you blind the player and expect them to pay for the privilege?

Realm premium please!!! Increased chuck loads and improved performance and setting that allow kick times to be changed. I hate being kicked after 10-15 minutes.

This is obviously a large issue with the playerbase. I'll be canceling after my 30 day trial if this doesn't improve. I'll just go back to leaving a host console running 24/7 for free before I pay for this garbage. I would love to switch to java, but I have friends on Xbox and Switch who will miss out and I can't do that to them.

This is completely disappointing. I found this page searching for this assumed "bug" and how to fix it. I'm on the 30 day free trial and I thought they capped it for trial users or something, and saved the good hardware for paying users. This is a huge let-down and I'm definitely not going to pay for a realm that looks like it only renders 8-12 chunks. On my local hosted server (the same world we converted into a realm) I was utterly confused to see that I couldn't see almost anything since I like to spend some time in a flying pirate ship/blimp that I made above the clouds. This ship was always cool to hang out in because you can see all my friends houses, the custom village we made, and the mountains off in the distance. But when I spawned into the realm, I literally could only see maybe 4-8 chunks around me. I am a relatively new Minecraft player (probably only been playing for a couple weeks) and my view of this game has been negatively altered due to this disappointment. See screenshots below ↓

I am fortunate to be one of those people who can run a private server (big thanks for releasing that to the public) so we stopped subscribing to our family realm and started using that instead.  The 32-chunk render distance is amazing but we do miss some of the features exclusive to realms.

I would not mind paying more for a realm if it means more chunks/better service. Improves experience substantially.

80 chunks is amazing, why can't realms be adjusted? It's awful because at sky limit you can't even see the ground.

I play on a realm on windows 10 and it lets me do 80 chunks render distance, so if this is still a thing then idk because it works fine for me.

Please consider this Mojang! It totally ruins the experience for PC players.  Maybe have an option so lower performing platforms can lower the distance on their end? I'd gladly pay extra!

The render distance on Realms is so annoying. I think it’s unfair to charge £4-7 pound a month for us to not even have the choice to have a good render distance. The constant fog is irritating and makes the game look less pretty. My XBOX may be old but it can handle a lot.

Supposing the render distance is so low to avoid performance issues when there are multiple players online, can the render/simulation distance not scale according to the number of online users? I.e. reduce to the current limit when there are 6-8 players, but for lower numbers increase to 16, 32 etc. The cheaper Realm tier may have a lower draw distance per player. This would be a great compromise imo.

I just finally gave in and tried out realms. The features seem interesting, but the game is unplayable like this. I won't even continue to use the free trial, it's not worth it.

I was very dissapointed when i noticed the drawdistance, It's my friends xbox one world, so I kept bugging him to change the drawdistance, surely this was a host setting, as i could see only 4 chunks being selected, so he logged on my windows 10 pc, and the option is not even there?

All my intented redstone builds on realm, cannot work with only 4 chunks, at least 32 chunks should be an option.

    especially as it's a server!

Just started the 30 day trial, and immediately noticed that the view distance is greatly reduced. Very disappointed to learn that this isn't a bug or a setting that can be changed. It really reduces the sense of scale and wonder in the game. Undecided if we will continue with the realm after the trial.

So me, my cousin and his friends. Have a realm together (I am the host) My old PC had 14 chunks render distance, my new one has 56. I thought the poor render distance on the realm had to do with it being created on my old PC. But it was a different story with worlds, the render distance updated. I don't see why the render distance on realms can't be the devices maximum. Like, 90% of the realm members are using an Xbox One S, and the render distance is -10 for them, not too bad. But I lost 44 chunks, and thats annoying.

Please, update the realms, thanks. -Sam

Improving the render distance would certainly get Mojang more customers.
