There were many times in multiplayer combat when I found myself facing others in open sea, having but a boat, or being chased by a horde of players, lacking any 'Area of Effect' weapons to disperse them. I would propose a ceramic grenade, crafted using raw clay, and afterwards fired with a furnace (or a blast furnace, if you fancy.)
In real life, the Byzantines and Saracens did use this in their many naval battles, though the true recipe of Greek Fire is lost to time.
Afterwards, you would be left with a throwable grenade, shattering upon impact with anything having collision (this means entities, too.) Now, this hollow shell would not do much other than damaging any entity two health points or so. It would be necessary to fill it with:
- Potion bottles; after placing an empty grenade and a potion bottle in your crafting grid, the bottle would be emptied and the grenade displaying details of said potion. When this grenade is shattered, it releases a cloud of the effect; a bit like a lingering potion, but a bit smaller. The duration is also cut in half.
- Gunpowder; this would just create a small, yet fatal explosion upon impact; not breaking any solid blocks.
- And, of course, Greek Fire. I often found combat on boats and sea to be rather cumbersome, the strategy being mainly to hack another's boat from below. This grenade would simply shatter when used on land, but when on water, it would explode into a fireball, lighting water in a 6-metre radius to flames. No more escaping by boat!
