Perhaps they only imprison the traders with bad trades, so those traders learn their lesson, and they trade with other wandering traders, who would have a chance of spawning at the top of the outpo...

They would not stop to bow when angered, and might return to the gold block and bow later... That would be really cool, and add some real depth to their obsession with gold.
