One thing is very clear in Minecraft. The player controls everything. Every aspect of the world is tied to the player, so much so that it seems unnatural. I think this should be changed, and the Minecraft world should change and evolve over time.
For example, when I cut down trees, the leaves decay, and drop saplings. But the player is required to actually plant those saplings, which makes me wonder how these forests started in the first place. So, I think saplings should be able to be planted on their own. It can be rare, maybe a quarter of saplings from decaying trees will be planted and the rest will be dropped as items. That way, the player still has control, but the forests can also slowly grow on their own.
With this change, forests would become become crowded, even if the chance of a sapling being planted is rare. So I think trees should also die as well. Maybe leaves on trees decay on their own, and after a long time, the tree trunk also starts to decay, eventually leaving nothing left, so new trees can grow. This will not affect player-planted trees, and would be rare.
Also, when mobs eat, like sheep eating grass, there should be a small chance for mobs to breed on their own. That way, wild animals can remain common in your world.
The player would still have lots of control in this situation, and could still easily do whatever they want. But I think this would be a great way to make it seem like the Minecraft world is alive, more than ever before.
