The current nether only spans a paltry 128-block height limit, which makes it feel like a really large cave. Now that larger dimensions like the Sift are being introduced, it downplays the other dimensions for having lesser content.
Minecraft being such a polished game does not make sense to have its main progression-centered dimensions not have more diversity than purely having game progression tasks.
Increasing the nether's height by lifting the nether roof by another 100 or so blocks will remove the claustrophobic feeling of the nether and also allow some very unique terrain generation where multiple biomes can stack on top of one another. This will improve the exploration and aesthetic of the nether by a ton and remove the severe claustrophobic feeling of just being in a large cave. A later update to add more biomes would actually benefit from having more space to add to for the purpose of exploration and not just game progression.
And keeping a few 100 more blocks above the nether roof would also make sure legacy players benefit from the height upgrade instead of losing nether roof access. Minecraft also has given players the option to retain worlds in older versions so players can save their old builds if the new update causes chunk glitches while loading into old worlds.
Compared to End(256 height), the Overworld(384 height) and the Sift (around 200-300 blocks for large biomes), the nether seems quite lacking in comparison (128 blocks) as a dimension.
