Minecraft does many good things, one of which is vine spreading.
Bamboo is a plant that is very good at spreading and can regrow from even quite small shoots accidentally trampled into the ground or dropped in a nice place. I would like to suggest that bamboo could be made to be invasive, just like it can be in real life.
It would work like this:
- Any time bamboo sapling grows into an actual plant it immediately converts the dirt/grass/sand/gravel block it's planted on into a "bamboo rooted dirt/grass/sand/gravel" block. The texture is identical, but you'll be able to tell if you pick it up.
- Any time the bamboo has a growth tick it has a chance to spread to/convert an adjacent dirt/grass/sand/gravel block into another "bamboo rooted dirt/grass/sand/gravel" block. (This spreading might be restricted/prevented in harsher biomes like desert or badlands.)
- Any "bamboo rooted" version of a block can respawn a bamboo sapling above it on the growth tick, even if the plant is totally removed.
- Any "bamboo rooted" block underneath another block has a chance to either die, or spread upwards/diagonally upwards into a compatible block to reach the surface on the growth tick. (Allowing it to spawn more saplings if it reaches the surface successfully.
- Bamboo rooted blocks could be cleansed of their bamboo infestation either by cooking them in a furnace or placing them and covering them over with solid blocks until they "die".
This would give a fairly fun and realistic dimension to bamboo in the game.
