In late game a player may have accrued many levels of XP in their XP bar. They have all the best enchantments on their weapons and armour and therefore have no need/use for their XP levels. The XP can't be used to restore damage through the Mending I enchantment because that has to be done at the time XP is gained. Should the player die, all that XP has gone to waste, because the XP disappears when we die (except for 7 levels).
Here is an idea for a better use of XP: Allow stored levels of XP to add to the time a dropped item does not despawn. The more XP levels added to an item, the longer it takes to despawn. Maybe, if 30 levels of XP are pumped into an item, it never despawns. Since you're not going to do that to some lowly unenchanted axe, the world will not become cluttered with non-despawning items.
I envisage this process could be performed through an enchanting table. Place the item in the enchanting table and instead of enchanting it, you can add XP levels from your XP bar to it. The more you add, the longer it will take to despawn if you drop it.
Maybe increasing the length of time to despawn also gives the item some measure of protection from lava, should it be dropped there.
