Fireflies would appear as a passive mob in swamp and mangrove biomes, spawning only at night and with a higher chance near water, lily pads, and dense vegetation, being more abundant during rain or full moons and avoiding areas with excessive artificial light; they would move in small swarms, floating slowly and dispersing if the player approaches too abruptly, and could be captured using a glass jar capable of storing between one and five fireflies, causing the jar’s light level to increase progressively with each one, from a faint glow to a maximum level at five, emitting a soft, pulsing light rather than a constant one; during the day, fireflies would completely turn off their glow, leaving the jar unlit until nightfall, and the jar could be placed or hung as a decorative block and used as natural nighttime lighting, with balance limitations such as not functioning in the Nether, reduced brightness in cold biomes, and not fully replacing torches, maintaining an immersive and vanilla-consistent Minecraft mechanic.
