Currently, Minecraft is based upon the principle that nothing happens unless the player makes it happen. While that preference is understood, there's a lot of things that could be done to make the best of both worlds. There's a distinct problem that player builds/homes don't feel alive unless we force it to be and that doesn't sound like a fulfilling concept, the game has dabbled in the game feeling lived in so why not build upon it. Minecraft as a game that is familiar with this via bees pollinating crops overtime to copper aging overtime but lacks in how the wider world feels.
My Idea for a way to lean towards a better livelihood is to aim to add things that make the world feel more natural, lived in and alive while still leaving agency for those who want to play their way. We have the base ecosystem currently but things could be better.
Do you know when wolves hunt for sheep/rabbits? The meat drops like they hunted for sport, same goes for foxes with chickens/rabbits. Having the mob consume the meat to reproduce offspring when a nearby wolf/fox has also consumed some could be a start. What about polar bears, the mechanic to dig through snow and ice to find and consume fish like how the sniffer works would be a good mechanic, dropping a fish/bone afterwards to reward people who wait. What about sheep/pigs/cows? the addition of wild grown crops/flowers or limiting them to grass (not the block variant) could allow them to reproduce in the wild without player input.
