Post 1.18 world generation generally does a good job of sensically placing biomes next to each other. However, due to the lack of a suitable dry cold biome, plains and forests have been placed in cold regions.
The placement of these biomes has created two issues:
- Cold and neutral temperature regions are very similar as both use plains as their arid biome and forests as their neutral biome.
- These warm biomes can be placed next to frozen biomes, which creates harsh biome borders.
To address these issues and fill a niche that no other biome fills (dry, cold, yet not frozen biome that isn't tied to erosion), new non-lush cold biome(s) should be added to replace these out of place plains and forest biomes.
Some examples of biomes that could replace cold region plains and forests:
- Tundra - Cold, dry biome with very sparse spruce trees and little vegetation. Could generate with coarse dirt like the windswept savanna.
- Coniferous Forest - Cold, forested biome with spruce and oak trees.
- Sparse Taiga - Taiga biome with fewer trees, and more ferns, bushes. Could even have unique spruce bushes.
- Barrens - A cold biome that has no trees and very little vegetation. The surface is partially stone, much like the windswept hills. Only llamas, horses, and wolves can be found here.
- Mossy Fields - A biome that is peppered with mossy cobblestone boulders. Has sparse trees and vegetation. Has llamas and cows.
- Maple Forest - https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/360074514812-Red-Maple-Forest
