Firstly, let me say I totally agree with the philosophy that more does not equal better. I think it's wonderful that we got a new ore in the cave update, and it shouldn't be overdone. However, there is a certain point in the game that is lacking, and a new armor/tool set can fix it, where progression is not done very well, that being the early game.
Currently the intended early game armor is leather, but cows usually don't spawn in large enough quantities to warrant getting it, and now that leather has been pushed into a knish of protecting you from the cold, an armor set in it's place won't step on it's toes.
Enter Tin:
Tin is a common ore found near the surface that requires a wooden pickaxe to mine.
Tin can be crafted into a toolset that can mine faster/ deal more damage to mobs, but it's softer than gold, so it won't last you long.
The armor set is slightly weaker and softer than gold, however, the helmet allows you to look at endermen (a reference to tin foil hats)
Tin can be crafted into tin blocks, which when walked on make a crackling noise (called a tin cry) that outputs a different Redstone signal than walking on normal blocks, great for telling a system more accurately where a mob is.
Bronze:
Bronze tools and armor can be made by combining tin equipment with copper in the smiting table, bronze is less than iron in every stat, but has higher enchant rates. It could also give some sort of status effect like the turtle helmet does.
