Amethyst shards right now are quite under-utilised and is more of a decorative block more than anything. There is no repetitive use for the shards that make the player want to come back and harvest them that would be beneficial in survival gameplay. You only need to make the spyglass once, and tinted glass is more of a bonus.
Introducing: Attribute Rolls
You can combine any of your gear with an amethyst shard in the smithing table, when you hover over your item before taking it out, it will have [???] as one of the modifiers. This is because amethyst shards can roll certain modifiers but the player won't know what it is until they take the gear out of the table.
Those attributes are:
- +0.5 Armour Toughness [armour modifier]
- +0.5 Knockback Resistance [armour modifier]
- +0.5 Attack Damage [weapon modifier]
- +0.5 Attack Speed [weapon modifier]
- +0.5 Block Reach [tool modifier] (only for breaking blocks)
- +0.5 Enchantability [tools, armour & weapons]
- +0.5 Experience Gain [weapon & tool modifier]
You can only have one modifier on at a time, meaning players have to keep rolling for something they feel works for them.
Each time you roll, the cost of amethyst rises until 4, with every roll costing 4 after.
Adding the amethyst to your gear not only adds additional benefits, but it also adds little gems to the gear as a visual indicator that it has additional attributes added to it.
This adds a tiny little layer of upgrading to your gear on top of enchanting, and provides a good use for amethyst shards.
