As the legendary cave update has finally rolled around and we have had a chance to play with some of the new features in snapshots, we have seen mineshafts get some attention with their support beams and chains. This is cool, but why not have a complete reassessment of how mineshafts could be in the update that aims to make the underground exciting, scary and like stepping into a whole new adventure.
Biome specific variants -
The lush caves should be the home of overgrown mineshafts with life inhabiting, or rather infesting, every nook and crack, there should be bugs, rotting wood, plants, and an atmosphere reminiscent of Green path from hollow knight. The deep dark should have completely empty mineshafts, devoid of life and cloaked in mystery on the surface, a place with no sound or sight, a place where, when you do find something, it only serves the purpose of asking more questions, and overall giving the place a really spooky atmosphere. These are just two ideas, but the key thing is maintaining this atmosphere and level of detail that Minecraft just completely succeeds in having 99% of the time.
Size variants -
There should be sprawling networks that stretch from a entrance at surface level all the way down to bedrock to create this image of a functional, awe-inspiring undertaking, there should be tiny networks with cave-ins that are collapsing as you traverse them that create this image of age and the passage of time...
I hit word limit but I have so many more ideas (:
