I think it would be cool if some were biome specific, like could only be found in desert dig sites or jungle dig sites. Maybe some could only be obtained by trading with wandering traders.

Even cooler, if some were enchanted, they could give enchantments to the pot, like making it glow (more glow shards equals brighter glow) or giving a status effect while you’re touching it, like a mini beacon.

Finally add the red dragon as a shard.

Instead of 'dig sites' it would be great if archaeology paired with an overhaul of the oldest structures in the game (temples, dungeons, stronghold) and the addition of ruins on land to match the ones in the ocean.

Archaeology could be focused around the many structures in the game. Each structure would offer a pool of common shards (blank, tree, flower, animals..) and one or two shards unique to that structure. To collect all the shards in the game you would need to travel to a variety of structures sometimes visiting multiples of the same structure to claim the rarest shards and giving the player a reason to adventure out even into the late game. Shards then become trophies of your adventures as well as a story telling device allowing you to show off your rarest as pots and maybe also mosaics in item frames.

That way when you see a ruined portal or underwater ruin in the late game you don't just head their for the loot, you can also dig around for those missing shards from your collection.
