This change is very essential for a good Cave Update. Currently we mostly have about 60-70 blocks to dig until we reach the bedrock, which makes mining very easy and boring. For a good Cave Update, underground should be layered and the depth of it should at least be quadrupled. What I mean by layered is that blocks should be harder to break and the difficulty level of caves should also increase (with traps, with environmental hazards such as lava, poisonous plants, blocks that slow you down etc. and most importantly with new and strong hostile mobs!) as the player digs down. If this is not done correctly, the update will be very disappointing. P.S if someone from Mojang is reading this, Terraria's underground is a perfect example for you to be inspired by.

Even like 100 to 150 blocks deep would be great and theres defenitly a reason to travel that for down because of the new deep depths biome. Plus dimonds and other ores could spawn deeper down making them harder to obtain.

The problem is that by doing that, the world would have to consider negative coordinates. One solution could be having chunks that are 16x16 from -256 to +256, but I don't know if that would be almost impossible to program, especially in older devices. I hope so.

    This is a must

If tripling then diamonds probably would be at ground level (y:70)

I would love if sea level was at y level 0, height limit at 256 and the void at -256

    YES and absolute YES!

Going underground would be completely transformed by this. having only 60 meters to dig down gets old pretty quick.

Going the cubic chunk-route seems like a good idéa as opposed to just increasing the height. In older worlds it could be retrofitted by generating in negative y coordinates, and the bedrock-layer is exchanged by a different block while converting the world to the new format. It just seems so logical to do. And at the same time, having much taller mountains would help a lot too with the new cliffs! This update literally is based on the extremes of the y-coordinates, so why not make a bit more room for creativity and exploration!

I do however understand that this requires a huge restructuring of the chuck-system, so it might take a lot of time and resources. Still, there is half a year until summer 2021 ;D

This would be huge, and likely break already existing worlds. It would be one of the greatest things to come to Minecraft, but it’s easier said than done.

Great idea. Would add so much more gameplay and opportunities.

not to say this change isn't a good one, but how exactly would this look with worlds with previous world generation before an addition like this? a big wall of bedrock at old world chunks that goes to the new depth level? just a straight drop into void under previously loaded bedrock? it's something you have to take into account with these kinds of ideas.

Also, the deeper you are, the more dangerous it may be, for example they could do oxygen levels. If you are underground for too long, you start taking damage. Certain mobs would also spawn at lower y-levels that would not spawn in higher levels.

If that happens we should get deeper oceans as well

As long as it's 500 height limit barrier for the overworld and a 256 height limit barrier for the nether, I'd be content. So liked.

Omg yess! This would be amazing! the caves look great, but i do fear that there won't be much room for it all if it's going to work well, having all the ginormous areas being on similar y levels is pretty lame, and with the giant looking mountains, there isn't going to be much room to build on them, i would definitely be excited to see the world size increase in terms of the Y level! Hope this happens!!

If Mojang adds this, they'd have to make the terrain be able to enter Negative Y-levels instead of making the new bottom of the world generate at 0 (The 2nd possibility would make giant walls in new terrain, and break every command block/datapack that uses co-ordinates), I'd love to be able to go down as far as Y=-500, if we're lucky, Y=-1,500. Cubic Chunks would also now have to be a possibility to ensure this doesn't lag the game.
Maybe also add something special to only occur BELOW Y=0, to make going into negative co-ords feel interesting!

This would be an amazing addition if they could pull it off, but personally I think it probably won't happen due to how hard it would be to implement. Mojang would have to rewrite their whole entire generation and chunk loading systems. They would also have to account for performance on lower end systems playing the game. However, If they could do it the mining experience would improve a ton! The mountains would also look much better. If Mojang decides they want to increase the world's height or depth this would be the perfect update to do it in.

The stream did show footage where the height and depth limit seemed to have been increased so I am excited to find out weather they change it or not!

I think they need to go to at least 512.

I would prefer it if this would be done by extending the bottom of the world rather than the top via negative coordinates, I don't want my survival world seed to break.

Increasing the depth underground sounds as a good idea, especially for gigantic caves that are coming with this update. But there would be problems that when loading an old world with bedrock or the void already explored, no new chunks would be loaded in that area which could lead to a chunk deformations. I think that increasing the height of the world would be a better solution... But I don't know, maybe also that could also lead to chunk problems in the surface, maybe increasing both the height and depth while making sure to "remove" that void sounds like a great idea.

Well, heres the thing, it would be very difficult to somehow generate new terrain under pre loaded chunks. This would cause a lot of issues for old worlds. Mojang would have to completely rework the coordinate system, and they would also have to change the way chunks are generated. Instead I propose that they increase the vertical build limit. While this would not allow for more room to dig, it would still be very satisfying for large scale build projects and also leave room for larger mountain generation. The taller mountains could have their own unique caves in them. I think that your idea is pretty good, but not very realistic. I do really fear for old worlds, and I hope they can find a way to make cubic chunk generation if they chose to add this.

This would be excellent for progression changes. Right now, it takes about 2 seconds to get enough iron for a full set of gear, and about 5 minutes to get to diamond level. With this, you could even out progression more. Personally, I would be very surprised if they didn't add this.

I like the idea of sea level being 0 and there being 256 above and 256 below . I mean the name of the game is "mine"craft and there are 3+times blocks above sea level as there are below

The most likely thing to happen is that they will increase ground level to somewhere around y100-y120, this has been confirmed on reddit as they calculated redstone can spawn now at most y43 now.

Make it at least 300-350 blocks height

i believe they should flesh out the redstone or industry parts, because, if we're mining, they should include proper industy , factory, or ore processing equipment, too! i haven't seen anything ever  since the observer and the lectern, so we need it, you guys  are awesome, mojang, and i know you can do it!

So, the amethyst geode idea really has me excited. The one thing that I would like, though, is MORE than just amethyst. Maybe sapphire, or ruby, topaz, something like that. Maybe even armor or tools to go with that. What would be even cooler is new bows! Running into a PVP match with a Ruby Crossbow or an Amethyst Bow. That sounds awesome to me. In conclusion; new types of crystal geodes.

Antvenom of all people came up with a clever solution to this problem for raising the Nether roof. Same problem, essentially.

The best way not to have old worlds affected by the update is to simply... raise them. If the new sea level is at 128, modify all of the old world's entity and block data to be 64 blocks above what it currently is. That might take awhile, but the load time only happens once.

When bordering new cave update chunks, simply create a vertical bedrock wall from y = 0 to y = 64. And then, that's it! Old world converted. What's essentially left is for the devs to decide on if they want to do this or not.

Hell yeah!! It only makes sense, since we have giant mountains, room for mining, followed by giant caverns, more room for mining for diamond and iron, deeper still caves, and the deep dark biome! Sure, we COULD squeeze all of that into the current world height, but I feel that with this new, giant update, it only makes sense to let the world breathe, and have more room for its full potential. Can't have the Deep Dark only tall enough for the Warden to walk around with its horns scraping the ceiling, can we? xD
