I posted this to the Suggestions Subreddit, and someone mentioned I should post it here too.
Right now, if you throw a Trident with the Loyalty enchantment but, for whatever reason, manage to pick up an item, the trident will go into your inventory, or if your inventory is full, will hover around you until you have a space open to retrieve it.
This is a QoL fix that makes tridents more enjoyable to use. Throwing a trident if your underwater and then going to the surface for air means you will likely pick up some rotten flesh from other drowned you have killed or some kelp you accidentally broke while fighting said drowned, meaning you have to open your inventory, to fix it, while your under attack from drowned with tridents.
This placeholder item could just be the outline of the trident, that lets you only pick up the trident in that slot. If your throw your Trident into an area where it cant comeback with loyalty, the void for example, you can right click with the placeholder in your hand and it vanishes, allowing you to pick up items in that slot again. If you accidentally right click with the place holder in hand, don't worry as the trident will still comeback to you like normal but you might just pick up an item on accident.
This would also finally allow you to use use tridents in your off hand and allow it to come back to your off hand.
Nothing is more irritating than having to shuffle in your inventory while fighting Trident Drowned because you accidentally picked up some rotten flesh from another drowned you previously killed, and then dying because of it.
