1.9 combat is controversial. Parkour hasn't gotten many new toys since slime blocks. I believe both could be solved with one addition.
Adding a movement mechanic like a roll or sidestep could make combat more involved. I believe one of the reasons people don't like the 1.9+ combat is it slows things down. I think the cooldowns are at a fairly good place, but there needs to be some addition to make it less of a "who can click on rhythm more accurately".
Personally I liked pre-1.9 because it was constant action. You have to continuously aim your hits and strafe to avoid getting hit yourself. The cooldown on attacks is not a bad change in my eyes but by adding a movement mechanic to the game you add another element that gives players something to do and think about while their attacks are on cooldown.
If a roll is added you can roll in or away to get combos or heal/take a ranged attack. You can use the roll to get beside someone and get a hit on them if they're hiding behind a shield.
Gameplay wise rolling could have a cooldown, and if you're hit while you roll you could be slowed for a moment, as if you're knocked prone. This would prevent players from rolling out of attacks for free and would reward people for having quick reaction times with ranged weapons or for baiting out and punishing rolls, and would prevent people from just shielding an attack, swinging, then rolling away.
For the aspect of parkour, rolling could allow for a short burst of speed faster than regular running in a direction, but without the height from jumping. You could use this along with possibly being able to cancel the roll when you fall off an edge to get a boost of speed if you jump fast enough when landing on another block (Think bhopping to conserve momentum in source games).
The edge cancel is obviously somewhat of a far-fetched idea but even without it I'm sure it would allow for a much needed breath of fresh air into the parkour scene.
It doesn't have to be a roll either, that is just what comes to mind. I would love to see feedback from the community and conversation on what other movement ideas people might have.
