Here is what I mean.
Forward:
The humble cookie: A lot of the time foods such as the humble cookie are forgotten in favour of porkchops, beef and various other foods that are becoming staples to the player, lesser used foods have been swept away under the fridge. Here is my solution to getting those foods from out of the fridge and being eaten again and no not with a long stick!

Food buffs!: So let’s take the humble cookie again, high in sugar and not much else, this food should certainly give you a bit of a sugar rush right? Therefore I propose that eating different foods could affect your combat, mining, building etc.

Sugar rush: Gives you haste and swiftness for a short amount of time, can be obtained by eating cake, cookies and maybe sweet berries.
Protein punch: (Could do with a better name): Eating things like pork, beef and mutton could give you a stronger hit and a higher chance of critical hits during combat, but have a 5% chance of slightly slower movement, the chances getting higher the more you eat, after all big meals can make you tired right?
Sea smarts: Eating fish (except pufferfish) would give you a higher chance of gaining of receiving higher level enchantments from an enchanting table.
Dairy debuff: Of course we all know what milk does, if you don’t want any of the effects provided by the food, just bring a little milk with you, milk is the cure for all things!
Vegetarian variety: Of course there has to be effects for those who don’t want meat or dairy. Because veggies in minecraft are a little limited unlike the other omnivore or meat eaters choices, each fruit or vegetable could provide a different buff, for example an apple can reduce the chance of bad effects from things like rotten flesh occurring, a sort of vegetarian alternative to milk. Carrots could provide a reduced form of night vision (yes I know it’s an old wives tale but nevermind) and pumpkin seeds (though not a food right now) could also provide a non meaty protein punch, seeing as they are a high source of protein, be a bit slimy though.

Note:
These are just some example ideas and are not meant to replace potions, so there buffs could be less strong and perhaps a little bit shorter, maybe depending on the foods saturation? Maybe even the buffs could have a slight chance of not working.
