So, with the new addition of bamboo, I'd like to suggest a new weapon idea. I don't want to overdo it, like how some suggestions are like "add a guardian laser" (would be cool though, ig), "add guns," etc. etc. I just wanted a simple idea that could just make PvE and maybe PvP (1.9 is pretty okay to me, I don't have any problems with it, but it seems unfinished and not completely thought out- so I must agree 1.8 PvP is better. However, my idea here is 1.9 oriented.)
Anywho, here's the idea: a bamboo bo staff, crafted using 3 bamboo in a diagonal or vertical line in the crafting bench. The damage would be that of a stone sword and the cooldown between attacks would be a tad bit slower than a sword's. I was going to suggest that it could hit further, due to it being a long staff, but I'm not too sure about that. What do you guys think?-TL:DR bamboo staff crafted with 3 bamboo pieces, similar to sword in damage
Now, you may have read the title and wondered how mobility plays into this. Thus, let's move on to the most interesting part of the staff. My idea is based off of the things you'd see in glorified kungfu movies, where some Shaolin monk uses the staff as a hold on the ground (kinda like how kangaroos use their tails, if that helps) and leaps off the ground, kicking at his opponent, except my idea would allow the player to be more mobile, as if they were pole-vaulting. As a fun fact, this sort of stick-on-ground, feet-in-air move is used in Shaolin martial arts, but is not prevalent and practical- nonetheless, I think it'd be cool in Minecraft, and not everything in Minecraft is entirely realistic anyway.-TL:DR pole-vaulting mobility movement, based on Shaolin. I will explain how the controls would work in the next paragraph.
So basically, in order to perform this vault (which essentially gives you a short-term height and speed advantage in a fight, letting you run away faster or rush your enemies), you would have to hold the staff and right-click on the ground. The blocks have to be within a single block of your x/z pos (if you were standing on a block, it'd be the 8 blocks surrounding you) and 2 blocks of your y pos (basically, you could jump off of a block and hit the block beneath you, and even if you're not standing on it, you'd still perform the vault). Like attacking, this pole vault uses up durability (1) and speeds up the hunger process. I didn't want to restrain the player too much (original idea is you could only do it while sprinting, but that'd restrict players with low hunger, and I can see moments where it's out of your control, making it un-fun and unfair). If you right-clicked anywhere else, your offhand items would be placed/used (basically, you can still use a shield with the bamboo staff, unlike a trident, but only if you don't click within the regions of blocks that I specified). Also, after performing the move, you can crit in mid-air, but once you land, the cooldown to perform a vault again is reset, maybe to 4 seconds? What do you guys think?-TL:DR right-click on the ground within a certain area of blocks (italicized above) to give yourself a boost, helps in combat or running
NOTE: thanks to u/Holdenmicgroin for suggesting the idea that this pole-vaulting move could be an enchantment that's mutually exclusive to a couple of other gameplay-altering enchantments (e.g. staff-specific enchantments like reach or faster swapping). If you guys would, state your opinions on this.
Minor things I would like to see, if added:
-if you were to perform the vault move after jumping off a cliff, you wouldn't take fall damage as you do the move, but if you land on a hard surface, you will then take 50% of the original damage. If you vault into water though (say you saw water in a ravine but misjudged a leap, you could vault into the water) you would take no fall damage. This gives almost a second chance, but is skill-based/requires timing.
-when holding the staff, the character model would have the arm slightly backward, and the staff would be behind your back (I'm sure you've seen movies or games where there's a person with a staff or spear, and he/she holds it diagonally across their back). I don't think this would be too hard to implement.
Thanks for reading! Comment any suggestions or critiques, I am open to all of them!
