So the Mojang team is adding everything that was planned but never developed (lecterns, stone-cutter and now lenterns), I think it's time to implement a feature that was originally planned for Beta but was never released. The spikes can work by extending and retracting using a "Spike Piston." There should be 3 variants of spikes in the game: Wooden spikes, stone spikes and iron spikes.
The wooden spikes would be very fragile, have a chance of breaking if a player falls on them from a certain height distance, can be mined very quickly using any tool and would break very easily overtime if a player or a mob is standing on them for too long. It would deal very little damage to mobs, and the delay before taking damage would be longer. Note: Mobs are not stupid, they are not going to simply "walk" over the spikes while taking damage. They should avoid the spikes unless the player uses certain tactics against them - such as using traps to make the mobs fall straight onto them.
The stone spikes would be less fragile than the wooden spikes, would require at least a wooden pickaxe, would require stone blocks to craft them and would deal more damage to mobs with a slightly quicker damage delay.
The iron spikes would be the most powerful variant. They would require a decent pickaxe to break them, would deal the most damage to players and mobs. They of course would break overtime but would be amazing for improving your medieval defense-system (without the need of cactus).
