When you are making your redstone suggestions, please note that Java and Bedrock will not have the exact same the same redstone systems - this would require redoing redstone system completely on one platform or the other. The two systems are functionally different and are going to stay that way. Please be sure to tag your suggestions with (Java) or (Bedrock).

This sounds like a neat idea.  How much damage would these spikes do?  Would they be weak like a cactus, only a real threat if you can't move away?  Or would they be stronger, able to kill an unarmored player in a few hits?

This is a feature I always wanted in the game! But if ever implemented, it should be well balanced, without making mob farms too easy (maybe the spikes could destroy items or have a certain durability).

I would like to share my design brief for them with the community. Unfortunately my post was removed in preference for this one. I am posting this here with great vitriol and disappointment. Please read it over though, the idea is solid.

A Redstone Spike is a block that extrudes a spike when powered by redstone. It can be placed in any orientation like a piston. When fully extended the spike becomes a solid object preventing players and mobs from walking through.

If the spike extends into a player or mob, they approach the tip of an extended spike, or jump on top, they will take 3 hearts of damage. If they become stuck in a spike, they will take 1 heart of damage each second they remain. The most effective trap uses an alternating current of redstone pulses to deal multiple lots of 3 damage.

If a block stands in the way of the spike, the spike will not extend. Instead the the block will take damage equivalent to a swing with a stone pickaxe. If triggered with an alternating current of redstone pulses, the block will eventually break. If the block is mineable by a stone pickaxe, the block will fall to the ground as an item.

    It can be crafted using:

    Cobblestone Nether Quartz Cobblestone
    Cobblestone Blaze Rod Cobblestone
    Cobblestone Redstone Dust Cobblestone

Although Nether Quartz is light related and a Blaze Rod grinds into dust, I chose them because they go together thematically and because I wanted to prevent access to the tool until at least after exploring the Nether. I did not want to use iron, diamond or a sword in the recipe because they each suggest a power greater than a stone pickaxe and as /u/Dinnerbone has said, he does not want to fully automate the game.

I believe this design will elegantly compliment the current collection of redstone tools and just fit into the game as if it was always there. Let us know if you have wanted something like this in the game for a long time. Let us know if you disagree with the design choices in any way.

What if there is natural spikes in caves (need silk touch) and if you put it in a crafting table with Redstone dust you get the Redstone spike

What if you could place them facing different directions, like pistons, and they slow you down when you are standing on them while they are active?

    Crafting recipe idea:
    Air Pointed Dripstone Air
    Cobblestone Iron Ingot Cobblestone
    Cobblestone Redstone Cobblestone
I think instead of it extending further depending on signal strength it should deal damage depending on signal strength, the strength of zero would not extend the spike and each power level would deal 1hp (half a heart) and whilst protection and resistance help, basic armour would not. It would look similar to a dispenser or dropper when facing up as to better disguise it with duds. I'd imagine that the spikes themselves wouldn't be their own block separate from the trap so that they wouldn't affect tripwires, just in case.
