Americanmario, Gillagers are aquatic villagers. They aren't dead. They just are just human-like fish. In fact, Gillagers can't breath air.

A new passive aquatic civilization is a great idea to add to the game
They could have water villages and new structures in the ocean

I think of a different designer for this crowd
Since it must be a new crowd different from the one in the game

POR Q AGREGARON ESTO EN LA ACUATIC UPDATE

Maybe his idea is that the villagers would be living under water and would some kind of an item or potion, that allows them to breathe underwater without any problem, and then this item or potion could be acquired by the player and have as recipe,so that player can make it whenever he needs. Also they would be the ones that would kill the underwater zombies, and you could eventually, trade with them to get a trident, cause currently, tridents are pretty hard to get,and now as we have villages and villagers living underwater, being able to trade with them, would be more exciting to jump into the ocean and look for them to trade to get a trident. Also I think that they would differ by the fact that they are living underwater, they would be killing the underwater zombies(the normal ones and the new ones),and also,if attacked by the player, they would become agressive towards him,and try to kill him.

a solution to this all would be to make underwater villages (single ruins and monuments don't count), make them all drowned villages with a low% chance to spawn a "gillager drowned" nearby, like a zombie villager you turn back into a normal villager do the same for the "gillager" and like an enderman can't touch water the "gillager" cant touch air. you could trade for coral blocks/plants/fans, scutes, rare trident enchants (or just tridents since I haven't been able to get 1 since they patched it to be next to impossible to get) you get the idea. the stuff that is hard to get, at this point all the aquatic update did was make the ocean look pretty and useful then they patched out the useful side and now there is no real reason to stay anymore.

side note:- why did you remove the ability to sleep underwater with a conduit nearby.

yes. they should be like normal villagers, but live in sunken villages with guardians instead of golems and they should have different professions. they should have dolphins instead of animals

It would be a good idea. I would put the villagers to trade with them give you a new material that is near the villages that is a blue gem called Sea Gem. Villages would be difficult to find.

i think what emerald was trying to say is that gillagers are another breed of villagers that dont need doors and dont need iron golems like the pillagers but they protect themselfs and fight the drowned. which if anyone follows gametheory would totally disrtupt his theory.  so basiclly a self sustaining tribe of mermaid-villager people that have somewhat less technological advancements than the villagers i like it

    Maybe even zombie gillagers too!

Gillagers are a tribal community found in villages at the bottom of Deep Ocean biomes. They are covered in greenish blue scales and have large fish tails instead of legs. They throw tridents and will follow the player relentlessly if provoked. They are scared of the sun so they won't chase the player to the surface unless it's night.

There are 3 types I have come up with so far.

    1. Hunters wear turtle helmets and are covered in scars. They will sell rotten flesh, various fish, basically anything that once belonged to a mob. They will sell buckets of fish as well.

    2. Gatherers are covered in cloaks made from kelp and sea grass and wear coral jewellery. They sell underwater plants, corals, anything plant based.

    3. Stalkers are considered the leaders of the tribe, covered in glow ink and wearing guardian eye necklaces. They sell all the best stuff for the highest price, hearts of the sea, buried treasure, nautilus shells, even tridents. They will also follow the player out of the village to make sure they are no longer a threat.

They live in houses made of ancient ruins and shipwreck parts. They are very territorial, attacking the player if they try to build in their territory, unless the player is 'worthy' enough. To earn 'worthiness' the player must kill underwater monsters, extra points for Elder Guardians. The more 'worthy' you are, the better and (cheaper trades) you get. If you attack Gillivers, dolphins or have Bad Omen, you'll be killed regardless of your 'worthiness'. 1/2

The way Gillagers trades is similar to an Enchanting Table, let me explain. You are presented 3 options, pick 1 and a new 3 will appear. The trades get better depending how 'worthy' you are. They use Prismarine Shards as currency, instead of emeralds, gold or lapis. They could have profession blocks, or the Gillagers could spawn with a random profession. 2/2

Yeah and they would be zombified by drowns but they couldn't have an iron golem or it would be not scientific since iron rusts but this is minecraft we are talking about screw science!!!

Cool concept. I don't know if this would fit or how this would fit into the lore. However, I think a good idea would be to have ancient / old underwater villages. These villages could have drowned villagers who could be called drowned gillagers. The idea being that these villagers were once above the water but now are underwater. These villages would most likely be found along the coast close to the edge of oceans. It makes sense considering the potential effects of climate change.

maybe they could have prismarine golems too

This mob would be similar to the drowned but I think it has potential to explain where the underwater structures came from or who built the pirate ships and the ocean monument.

Maybe, instead of that, just add a dimension called Atlantis, with luxurious underwater prismarine villages with these so-called gillagers. Also add different types of sea monsters to this dimension, the most powerful of them being The Leviathan, killing him will drop leviathan scales to craft Atlantian gear (other materials to complete the crafting of this gear can be prismarine, gold, Heart of the Sea, and maybe even a version of netherite, but for this dimension) and also add Poseidon's temple, where he died fighting Oceanus, who could be an evil boss that the player can slay to save Atlantis from its curse (I don't know what the curse can be, maybe a drowned infection or something) and also restore Poseidon's trident, wich could be found in the temple.

I love this idea. However, I would like to see the Gillager mob (if that's what we are calling it) being a new mob altogether that although it is intelligent like a villager, is something completely new. Not like a mermaid or something. More like how current villagers don't exactly mirror humans with their weird noses, an underwater villager that maybe has more adaptations for water like gills and fins or tentacles.

I like the idea, they’d be like Oceanid villagers. I imagine that close to ocean monuments there would be Gillager Settlements. And also, I don’t think drowned would attack Gillagers, quite the opposite to ordinary villagers.

Maybe Gillagers should be able to fight back any hostile mobs
