(Availability) Bedrock engine on Mac & Linux

Hey there! We're a Mac & Linux household, and we love the Java edition, and run our own server. But we'd also really like to enjoy the cross-platform play of the Bedrock engine. I'm sure it would also be really nice for you all not to have to maintain the Java codebase as well.

Or -- at least add cross-platform play to the Java Edition.

    Please don't forget about Linux. I refuse to buy windows, just to pay to get tracked and forced to upgrade, and all the other BS that comes allong with it. I would love to play minecraft with my siblings in other cities but they all play bedrock. It would also be nice to have access to the more modern and natively optimized bedrock version as opposed to continue on the Java version

    My family like's playing minecraft bedrock with each other on there tablets and windows pc. I personaly use a linux machine and find it very frustrating that the only way I can play with them, is with a smartphone with small screen and touch controls, or getting out my slow old laptop. I would really like to be able to play minecraft bedrock from a linux machine.

    I agree with all of you, and also know the chance of this happening is quite low. Its a consequence of Microsoft owning the game. They only made it for Windows 10 because they want Windows users to upgrade to it, and Mac users to know even better how bad a gaming platform MacOS is. It's fully in their best interest to keep it this way

    So you know at this point it’s been a year and no word of anything being in development or anything being confirmed. Something dumbs going on, I suspect Microsoft has something to do with it. With Minecraft being a staple windows application now maybe they don’t want MacOS also having that. Which is absurd because of the java edition already existing but that does feel as seamless and convenient as the bedrock edition is. Honestly it’s an easy port since it’s C++ you already have the IOS app, apple makes it really easy for you to convert from IOS to MacOS so really this is all you. What are you guys up to?

    Please do this, but not at the expense of the Java Edition. I can't play with my sister which is on an iPad because of this.

    I don't know how much I can add to this thread, but I have been following the development of MacOS, and I noticed some new apps shipping with Macs in OS Mojave that are basically simple ports of iOS apps to MacOS called something like 'Marzipan' or somethin'. Honestly, if this does become available to 3rd party developers, which I expect to come this summer, the iOS version could be a simple port to Mac using this new system. Also, maybe that way we don't have to lose developers from Java! Fingers crossed!

    I completely agree, my friends have an Xbox server but my Xbox is a hassle and I love Java because of the platform its on, Mac

    I am 100% in favor of this, despite mostly playing on Windows. Cross-platform Bedrock with Mac and Linux would be great.

    Please bring Bedrock to Linux and MacOS! We'd love to see it. I want to experience the optimized Bedrock engine and play with all my friends.

    I'm with nasloan on this one. I'd love to see Bedrock available on Unix-like, but if that meant the death of Java edition, then count me out. Both versions can coexist, and both versions would reap the benefits of Bedrock on Unix-like.

     

    That said, supposedly this port has been in development for over a year, so let's hope we see the fruits of it soon. Honestly, just achieving a Linux port would be 90% of the work towards macOS, BSD, BeOS, and others. Furthermore, I fully expect that if macOS and Linux saw ports, the FOSS community would happily do the rest of the work to make an kernel- and userland-agnostic build for Unix-like OSes

    I would like this to happen for the ability to play with people on ipads or similar from my computer but the main reason I want this is because the way redstone works in java edition is awful the bedrock redstone makes so much more sense and is easier to use. I don't care if java becomes a separate version of the game and still exists because many like it the way it is but personally I heavily dislike java's redstone and want to be able to play bedrock on my mac.

    Having Bedrock already on Windows, it's just a must to have it on at least Mac too. Actually it's already done with Minecraft Education, so why not do it for the game itself?

    Bedrock edition has been out since 2017. It is now 2019. There is no good reason for there not to be support for Bedrock edition on systems running Mac OS. Mojang & Microsoft are alienating a whole userbase (and a large one mind you) by not allowing Bedrock edition for Mac OS. Please make this happen this year.... We've been waiting for 2 years now.

    Please! My friend only has apple computers and it's very frustrating that he can't play on the realm I bought. If you can get bedrock on IOS, you sure as hell should be able to get it on Mac OS as well! You guys can easily work past the technical issues, it's just a matter of buisiness. I can tell you one thing, no one is going to buy a PC so they can play Minecraft, so quit this embargo and port it already. Otherwise your ruining the spirit of what "better together" stands for.

    MacOs 10.15 Catalina is introducing cross platform apps between iPad and Mac, meaning that we should be getting this soon.

    Please, how is there no bedrock edition on Mac when they have it on iOS I just want to be able to play on my Xbox realm from my computer.

    For the love of god, just do it, please. Running Windows 10 in Bootcamp is so much of a hassle and I wish there was just native support for Bedrock Edition on macOS. It can obviously be done, seeing as Education Edition is a variant of Bedrock and it works on Mac. Just put it on the Mac App Store, maybe give Java Edition players copies of this one like you did with Windows 10 Edition, and finally life will be "Better Together". I know the Microsoft Acquisition hasn't made you hate Apple, what with the Minecraft Earth demo at WWDC, so please, just give us Mac users some love.

    As a user nasloan said, I would love for bedrock on mac, but not at the expense of Java edition
