I think having a slot to add a backpack on your back should be a feature and it adds to the adventure aspect of Minecraft. Maybe even adding a specific villager type to trade with to upgrade like a crafting table backpack, ender chest backpack, or an upgraded one that saves your backpack inventory when you die? Hope to see this added!!

Nice idea, but don't you think the addition of Shulker Boxes already took that spot?

Having a backpack could be a very good idea.

The crafting recipe could be a chest in four leather, or completely surrounded.

It can only hold 8 items as a backpack can’t realistically carry a massive amount of stuff without ripping. You can dye the bag so it has a special color. You could also maybe put a pattern on it. The item can be loaded from the inventory but you can also set it down. It could look a bit like a trunk suitcase while on the ground or something.

Also what if the backpack can only hold certain kinds of items, like you would need to add ice to it to hold food, a bit like a cooler. Just a random idea that could help make it less op.

I think that backpacks are a great idea however I would like to see them being accessible without placing them and they would have to be an early game item possibly crafted with leather and string

I also think that backpacks would be a good idea because you realy need the extra storage early game because it would be helpfull for mining and for tools

here are some of my ideas and please add this to bedrock too

backpack : 8 leather in chest formation

adventure backpack : bed in center furnace on top crafting table on bottom leather on the sides small inventory

can be slept on can be used for crafting and smelting and small inventory

end game backpack bucket on each side adventure backpack on bottom skulker box in center leather everywhere else

large inventory liquid storage all adventure backpack featueres

simaler to travelers backpack mod       please add to bedrock

Yes backpacks,it would be made of leather, give 9 to 18 slots (It needs space but not too much)and take up your chest plate spot in your inventory. It will be useful because it would replace the shulker box in early game but hold less as the shulker box has the same space as a chest and will be a reward for going far and killing a shulker. The backpack on the other hand is a starting shulker box that holds less and takes away your chest plate slot it will be fair and equal. Unless someone uses the backpack to hold the shulker box then its little over powered but I strongly agree with the idea with a backpack.

This backpack would be made of leather and mud and would have a shape similar to a flat chest.

    Benefits:

    > The player would have 20 more empty spaces to fill.
    > The transfer between houses will be faster.

    Disadvantages:

    > The player loses points from the food bar 5 times faster, as he will have more weight on his back.
    > If the food bar has only 7 "shank" (or 14 points) of food bar, he will no longer be able to run.
    > In place of the armor plate or elytra, we would have the backpack.

Backpacks would be a great idea. It would be an ideal tool to help you when you are traveling. With a backpack, you can bring all your stuff with you.

I don’t think that we need backpacks as we already have shulker boxes and ender chests

This would be amazing to have for an early game, or just to use so I don’t have to fix my shulker box storage in my worlds, I could be able to just craft some of these and take them on the go. These would be such great items to use, early and late game. I really don’t think they defeat the purpose of the shulker box, but more so add a rival, or counterpart.

it would be better if u could equip it in ur off hand slot or Chestplates slot and it could store items

It would just be a shulker box upgrade, but I think it's a great idea if it is possible to directly open it in the inventory.

I think this should be added but have less inventory storage than a chest, and buff the shulker box storage massively

Se adicionarem o item, acho que será meio que um "inventário a mais" para o seu jogo pois há muitas coisas no meio da aventura que você não consegue pegar por falta de espaço. +1 voto

The backpack would either take up the torso slot for armor, or have an entirely new slot next to the torso slot for items to wear over your armor.

It could be crafted with 8 leather.

It would allow you to have an extra 9 slots of inventory space and could possibly be upgraded later on to a different tier (3 tiers in total) to add 9 more slots each time.

-It would not defeat the purpose of a shulker, or replace a shulker by any means because this would be an early game tool. Also, shulkers are only obtainable after you defeat the ender dragon so this would be a good tool for newer players who are traveling long distances.

In my opinion, shulker boxes are more than enough to any minecraft player, though as other people said, it's for late game (after you beat the ender dragon), but if you were to make a backback with the same size as a shulker box, that would pretty much render the shulker box useless, And as a way to balance that, you could make the size of the backback smaller than a shulker box (maybe about one additional row to your inventory is enough). I also think upgrading your backpack would still render the shulker boxes useless so that's why I don't agree with that (maybe at least having one upgrade that adds one more row).

My ideas on how backpacks could be implemented:

    1. Could be crafted with Ravager Hides. This would give the ravagers a desirable loot as well as making the backpack more of a rarity, due to the spawn rate of Pillager patrols and the high level of Ravager combat difficulty
    2. Would occupy the Chestplate slot.
    3. Could have an upgrade system similar to that of maps (i.e. Level 0/4) in place of paper, you would use Ravager Hides.
    4. Dyable
    5. Can hold shulker boxes

Here's how I think it could be crafted: (black ink in place of Ravager Hides)

While this recipe would allow players to craft multiple backpacks using fewer Ravager Hides than would be necessary for upgrading the backpack to higher levels, I feel this system is still balanced. If players want to wear multiple backpack inventories at one time, then they can spend the extra 3 Ravager hides to do so. Giving the player the option of multiple low-level backpacks or fewer higher level backpacks.

I've made a mockup of what I think the gui could be below.

Here, the backpack is depicted at Level 3/4, having 4 tabs and 84 extra slots (The maxed backpack would have 5 tabs and 105 slots)

Players could also give each tab an item to label each section of the backpack (potentially at the bottom of the gui)

This mockup was the first step towards making a mod, but I would rather have the MOJANG team make it. I did my best to keep the design balanced as well as keeping in mind how it would fit Minecraft's gameplay.

     - Sincerely, BenGamin98

Shulker boxers are basically a backpack but end game/late game.
I think some kind of cheaper (smaller sized inventory storage) for early game backpack made from leather or something?

Backpack would be good for early game.
I suggest that backpack only have 12 extra space to make shulker box a needed thing late game.

I think the only way this could be ballance would be you wouldent be able to have it in your inventory and would have to have it on your chest plate slot. also it would only supply an extra 5 item slots. anything above that would be over powerd. i also don think it should be craftable. If it were craftable it would have to be expensive for early game. using say a ghast tear and eye of ender

I love this idea, as its an extension of shulker boxes with added functionality. A few implementations ideas to add:
Crafted with leather and a chest, and takes up your chest slot.

    1) This implements the trade-off that was agreed upon by devs for the elytra implementation, so we know that its a fair trade to add a feature if you remove your chestplate.

    2) It's an early game trade-off to the chestplate, but you get this way earlier in the game, which I don't think makes it OP, and here's why:

    • You don't have access to ender chests or shulker boxes yet, so this gives us more space without lugging a llama or mule around with you.
    • I feel that giving you access to this in early game is a fair trade-off in your chest slot, as EACH individual armor slot is MUCH more important when you have leather/iron armor. By the time you get the elytra, you've been able to defeat the dragon (in most cases) so the late game loss of a single piece of armor isn't NEARLY as big of a loss of a chestplate in the early game, as you're likely to have diamond armor/tools, enchantments and potions by now.

Edit: My thoughts on crafting are to follow the trend of the shulker, by fashioning leather around a chest (1 chest, 8 leather), in the same way that we crack a shulker in half, and shove a chest inside it.

It should hold like 20 items but every item makes you slower.

I feel like backpacks wouldn't replace shulker boxes but there would need to be limitations for it in order to not be op. It shouldn't hold as much as a chest, I think about how much a donkey chest can hold is good and like someone else said, wear it instead of a chestplate or you can't store items in it so only one per person. It wouldn't really defeat the purpose because saddles aren't that easy to find and on top of that you need to also find a donkey after or a mule. Plus it could act like extra travel storage next to donkeys, an example would be needing to move a lot of items as a person who didn't reach the end yet since there are a lot of people that prefer to spend time in their world instead of finishing it fast.

I know that there are shulker boxes but those are hard to get and inventories are small. Backpacks could be a second inventory that you can wear in the chestplate area.

What if the Backpack literally added more inventory space instead of having it's own separate UI. That way it wouldn't defeat the purpose of a Shulker Box. The backpack would a one or two bars of storage to your inventory, but at the cost of taking up your off hand slot (Where your shield would go)

What if you could put one item in the backpack, like the crafting table, and it would serve as a portable one, or a jukebox for music everywhere you go. or just a chest for a few extra slots.

Shulker boxes already serve this purpose, and are late game for a reason. Inventory management is part of the challenge of the game.

This is a good idea and the existance of shulker boxes doesn't make up for this.they are end game items and are really hard to obtain. So for backpacks to work.
They work as a expansion to your inventory.
They take up an armour slot or maybe a new slot only for backpacks?
They can't be crafted and are found in dungeon chests, so you have to explore.
You can't put them on ground and store items.you have to have it in your inventory.
As soon as you take them off, all items drop.
They have a limit of 18 slots
This would be a really great addition to the early game as we all know, picking up all your items from first days is the worst experience ever. And to most people in this thread, no they won't replace shulker boxes and won't feel like modded Minecraft, they will simply work as an expansion to your inventory that can't store item while being placed on the ground. The concept of an ore more powerful than diamond was deemed pretty modded but here we are, we have to at least give this idea a chance. How do we know it feels like modded when we know that many modded features(or modded resembling features) that made into Minecraft were a great addition.
