In Minecraft, there is currently only one variable distinguishing each of the various fuels available: the length of time that it lasts. This is a very uninteresting mechanic.
To address this, I propose switching to a system where each fuel has its own burning time and smelting speed. The exact numbers could be based off of properties of the real world. From what I’ve read, actual birch wood gives off a lot of heat but burns out quickly, while oak wood lasts longer, but produces less heat. Coal and charcoal have different burning times and speeds, too. Lava, of course, tends to rapidly incinerate everything it touches.
If these differences were implemented into Minecraft, it would give survival players interesting incentives to pick some fuels over others depending on their needs.
Thank you very much for reading my idea!
