I've seen many suggestions for Floating Islands in Minecraft, but I believe my interpretation of how they could be added goes into more depth, and integrates much better into the vanilla game.
A new layer will be added to the world-gen, similar to cave generation, however this layer will be used to generate floating islands high above the overworld.
These floating islands will generate in many different ways, ranging anywhere from clusters of tiny floating boulders, lone islands of varying size, to even sprawling archipelagos that stretch across the horizon.
When a floating island is generated, there is a chance for it to be it's own biome unique to the biome below the island on the surface world. Floating islands can be any biome, within reason of course.
This would provide players a chance to collect resources that would be otherwise found only in far away lands. For example, a freezing cold ice spikes floating island may be drifting over a warm mangrove swamp.

Not only would these floating islands liven up the world, add new opportunities for unique sky resources and mobs, they would also provide many players with an ideal building location.
Please consider my interpretation of how floating islands should be added to Minecraft.
