It would be great if there was an option that asks you if you want to reduce your spawn chunks or keep the old ones when you update the world. Otherwise, many players would see their worlds damaged because they don't want commands in survival mode.

Spawn chunks are very important for technical players, I would like them to think about them and give an option to change the spawn chunks but for it not to be something by default.
or appear as an important option in the creation menu with the options normal (the number of current chunks), reduced (2 chunks) and disabled (0 chunks).
I think that with an option like this all players would be happy based on the issue of spawn chunks, technical players could play as usual and players who do not use this function could disable it, thank you for your attention.

Please Mojang, obviously this change is good for game performance but please don’t change the value of old worlds when update because it will be bad for old important builds in the world.

We appreciate your hard work on improving the game’s performance but please don’t make it more harder for old worlds when update.

    Thanks for reading! :)

This is a great idea and I think it's long overdue. Spawn chunks are completely irrelevant to the vast majority of players and it doesn't make sense to leave them lying around.

The default should be 0 - custom maps can always use /forceload. To avoid breaking old maps too much, maybe the default for upgraded worlds should be 10.

This is far too obscure to add as an options menu slider. The options menu is already way too cluttered.

I like the change and the ability to control spawn chunks. Especially the way it is that you can control for your own server.

But it also removes something from players like me; what I miss after this is a way to have chunks be guaranteed to be loaded. Nowadays in Java the command /forceload, but according to MC-227930 the fact that it doesn't load chunks is considered the "normal" behavior.

The best of worlds would be a in future update a way to, in vanilla, keep chunks loading in one dimension - nowadays there are hacks using portals, but that keeps the chunk you want and the corresponding one in the nether loading as well (or vice-versa).

Just for reference: I play minecraft in a world for 2-3 years and then start on a new seed. I use spawn chunks a lot for convenience farms since I go around the world building bases.

I think that the best way to handle this is to make new worlds generate with the decreased spawn chunk radius, but to have old worlds stay unchanged. Also, setting a lockable slide similar to the gamemode changer would be optimal, but only with a range from 2-10 chunks. Any chunk radius higher than 10 chunks (i.e. 11-32) could be accessed with commands. It seems unfair in a way to decrease the old default without giving a way to change it back without using cheats, but keeping chunk radius above 10 as a cheats only setting seems the most fair. Many people don't like to use cheats in their worlds, especially content creators, and would not be able to have as many automatic farms as before.

Also, thanks for the chance to vote on this. It changes such a large aspect of the game that has been in it for a long time, so it's good to have a chance to give opinions on it!

In the most respectfull way, I think we need an Option Screen so in the moment you update your world to 1.21, you can choose if you want or not the new spawnchunk settings, and in the Creating Worl Screen you can customize the spawnpoint size you want.

This way the technical players would be satisfied that they don't have to use any command on their survival world.

Thanks for think in the community and see options to optimize our worlds while giving us the chance to provide feedback.

It is good to have the option to alter the spawn chunks size but to reduce the old size is not. Keep them the way they are or give an option to decide their size when you uptade/create a world

This should be configurable without having to run commands. Every hardcore world that uses spawn for farms would possibly be forced to chunkload hundreds of chunks or ... run a command and have gone into cheats. Neither of those answers is realistic for 100s and 100s of us. It's a good change but pls consider other implementations.

Please, give us options. I understand why this change is positive for most players but this is forcing part of the community to either give up on 98 % of the spawn chunks—which are used in many technical contraptions— or use commands—which doesn't go well with the idea of a survival world. It would be great if old words could stay just as they were before when converting to 1.21, or if a converting-world screen would prompt us to choose between the old spawn chunks and the new optimized ones. Thanks for giving us the chance to provide feedback in such a gameplay-altering issue.

It is super important for users (players in this case) to have options. Ignoring that some players know what is happening is not considering them, and we all love spending time in Minecraft.
Some players have shared here options so we all can play the game we want. Hopefully, this is something that we all can achieve.

I think it is a bad decision to make the spawnchunk so small, at least for the majority of worlds that have already been created and there are constructions in the spawnchunk, there could be before entering the world an option of how many spawnchunk you want to have in your world

With this change, it seems to me that it is worth creating a block that will make the area around it always active, even if the player is in Nether. This will give you the opportunity to grow food while you can be anywhere. It is important that this block can be crafted, and that crafting is available from the very beginning of the game without any difficult-to-get resources. And then, you can improve it, like Beacon, and thus increase the area of always work.

The best thing that could be done is a spawnchunk loading option in the options menu similar to the chunk loading type.
    It could be something like:
    "Spawnchunks loading:
    -Low (3x3)
    - Medium (7x7)
    - High (10x10)
    - Ultra High (15x15)"
This is a simple example to fix it. (The size data is merely an example, not intended for those measurements.

By giving this option to the player, those who do not want to use the spawnchunks or have poor performance could lower it to the minimum and if they want to use it, they can activate it, as well as the simulation distance.

This is a great change. People are going to complain about any change to old mechanics, so don't pay that much mind. Most of the complaints highlight a specific pain point though: changing game rules or permanently enabling cheats without commands. This hasn't been a huge problem in the past, mainly just a minor annoyance, but it's definitely not that hard of a problem to solve. I think the best solution is to just put the existing gamerule editing menu from world creation into the edit world screen. This way people in singleplayer can edit the gamerule to whatever they want without enabling cheats or editing the nbt data.

Don't do the thing people suggest about keeping the old spawn chunk range for upgraded worlds, that doesn't make any sense to the average player. All you need to do is let the gamerule menu be accessible from the edit world screen.

It’s been more than ten years playing with the spawnchunks mechanic, I’m pretty sure that you should have a lot of statistics to share about performance improvements by making this change (which is very important to take a decision like this).
Either way, changing it suddenly and considering preserving the possibility to change the spawnchunks area by using commands makes no sense, if it is a performance related issue, then you should give the option to the player to change the spawnchunks area in a menu, just like every other graphic and performance related setting. A good idea to attend the subject is: whenever you create a new world an advertisement pops up asking to select the size of the spawnchunks, 1. Default (10x10) “Sacrifices performance for a lot of in-game possibilities!” 2. Small chunks (3x3) “For players who want a better performance experience”.
This way you can satisfy every part of the community and give them an option, which will make them feel listened and appreciated, as well as giving them control over their game experience (which is always a good thing).

UX+UI: just make a slider for Chunck Radius right below Render Distance and Simulation Distance.

This is the most logical thing to do in the face of such a drastic change.

Do it starting at 2 for new worlds only.

As a technical player running on older equipment, I love this change. This should help the game run soooo much better. I have to completely avoid the spawn chunks because my machine simple cannot handle it if I put a beefy machine in there. I'm very excited for reducing the lag that I didn't cause for once!

With few exceptions, technical players should be well equipped to execute a single command to customize their existing world as they see fit. I agree that this should be a configurable option on new world creation. But for most existing worlds, enable commands, execute this single command, and then turn off commands. That simple.

It seems unfair to me to force players to adapt to such a sudden change. I see it as much better to add an option that does not require operator permission (because not all of us want to put commands in our survival worlds) with which we can define according to our preference the size of spawn chunks (as with render/simulation distance)

I think they should allow pre-update worlds to keep the gamerule at 10, so many players won't be forced to use commands in survival worlds.

I am writing to express my concern about recent changes to chunk generation in Minecraft. These changes have had a negative impact on the way players can interact with the game world.

Recent changes to reduce spawn fragments will have a negative impact on how players can interact with the game world. For example, players will be limited by space when wanting to make large builds that need to be constantly loaded (such as automatic farms). This makes the game less fun by limiting the player too much.

If it cannot be reversed, I propose adding an option similar to those that allow changing the render/simulation distance.

The 1.21 spawn chunk tweak, while great for most, stings technical players. Our contraptions, built on 19x19's constant power, face extinction in a 5x5 world. Should we abandon them or cheat with commands? We propose options: let pre-1.21 worlds keep their size, or offer a conversion choice. Embrace diverse playstyles, please! We love exploring, but don't force us to abandon our technical hearts. Consider gentler optimizations or migration paths. Let's find a solution that celebrates everyone's Minecraft journey, not just some.

This condensed version retains the core message, emphasizing its impact on technical players and suggesting clear solutions. It maintains a conversational tone while expressing a strong call to action. I hope it packs a punch in a single paragraph!

Make it 2x2 by default, but if you go to "settings" before creating the world, you can choose what you want your spawn chunks to be like.
Is the technical community small? Yes, but he does not deserve to be attacked like this.

Hello, random Minecraft player here. I´ve tried the newest snapshot myself and I have some concern about the new spawnChuncks rule. Particurlarly, when you load a world from 1.20.4 into the newest snapshot the value defaults from 10 to 2, and for me, I personally don't like that because it doesn't make my game run much faster (about 20 fps faster) and it makes the visuals a little bit worse. My suggestion is, if the were world from prior 1.20.5, instead of defaulting the value of generation to 2, it instead mantains the value of spawnChuncks as before, that is, 10. The thing that I aprecciate, though, is that you, as of the current snapshot, you can change this value either with commands or external tools manually and that, when you create the world, you can change the radius of the spawn chunks.

I´m thinking about the idea of reducing spawn chunks a 98% and I understand the change. However, this will destroy some mechanism I have with pretty decorations. From my point of view, there should be an information screen before you update asking you if you want to reduce the actual size of the spawn chunks. If I choose to keep my spawn chunks, this will trigger the new gamerule keeping my spawn chunks size as always. Of course, that screen shouldn´t appear when you create a new world after the change.

I agree the change, but this option should exist when I update. I have no doubt. So please, dont force me to use commands in my world.

    Kind regards.
