As long as the state of chunk loaders isn't drastically changed I think this is likely a good idea. On servers I play with family and friends it is often a hassle making the spawn chunks passive mob proof as to make passive mobs respawn elsewhere for everyone. Performance-wise it is easy for undesired things to go on in spawnchunks in a multiplayer setting. For villager breeding, iron golem farms, shulker farms etc it is very easy to just build a chunk loader for them. That way you can more easily choose to unload them if they cause performance issues. Given an option to change the spawn gamerules I don't see much reason to not change the default setting. It keeps the feature intact, but with sound alterations to it. Anyone who really wants large spawnchunks can simply alter the size of the spawn chunks.

This idea is great for catering to all computer specs, but it will greatly affect they way lots of players play and enjoy the game.

This option should be added into the proper game setting instead of within 'cheats' because it only affects performance (like render distance and simulation distance)

    Besides that it's awesome.

This was literally the only feature that I cared about in Java. I don't ever have any problems keeping farms spawn chunk loaded and I don't run beastly costly computers. I think this should be an opt in or out option not just forced on the entire community. In one move you would kill the game entirely for me. I am a Redstone technical player or was before this update. You preach equality and try to cater to the masses but then say forget the tech heads? :(

This will be useful for redstoners who want to build massive farms on their world spawns, but also for those who have a laggy computer!

Can we have an F3+G view of the spawn chunks and each different type of chunk involved, with different colored lines shown within the chunk when using F3+G?

Please, give us options. I understand why this change is positive for most players but this is forcing part of the community to either give up on 98 % of the spawn chunks—which are used in many technical contraptions— or use commands—which doesn't go well with the idea of a survival world. It would be great if old words could stay just as they were before when converting to 1.21, or if a converting-world screen would prompt us to choose between the old spawn chunks and the new optimized ones. Thanks for giving us the chance to provide feedback in such a gameplay-altering issue.

The spawn chunks are about to be removed, can they be brought back so farms do not break?

Can we not just get a gamerule that is set to zero be default? Maybe I am missing something but this seems like the obvious solution here.

I remember a world I'd had about six years ago. I had spawned into a one chunk world, without commands. It was a world setting in the world creation pannel, before starting the world. I was in a swamp chunk and the rest of the world was complete void.
