The upcoming 1.20 update will introduce a way to customize your armor with a new feature - armor trims - and you can try them out right now! Armor trims come in various patterns which you can find in the form of smithing templates hidden across the Minecraft world and can then be crafted with the smithing table in all manner of creative combinations!
To find out more about the feature check out the latest snapshot changelog.
As with any new feature, we want to hear your feedback as we continue to fine-tune armor trims ahead of the release. Alongside your general feedback, we also have some specific questions which we’re hoping to help us iron out the design.
- How challenging is it to find Smithing Templates, and is it rewarding?
- Does searching the world for Smithing Templates feel adventurous?
- Do the diamond requirements for copying Smithing Templates make them feel rare or special?
- Does applying armor trims with the redesigned Smithing Table feel intuitive?
- How do armor trims look visually?
- Are you able to be creative when combining different types of patterns on separate armor pieces?
Let us know your feedback, ideas, and suggestions for this feature in the comments!

As a peaceful mode player, I'm excited that most of these will be obtainable, but why is the tide armor trim template not found in ocean ruin chests? If it's a matter of ocean ruins being too common, could they just be added to chests in big ruins? I can understand giving easy - hard difficulty players additional reasons to go to ocean monuments, but I don't see why the template couldn't also go into ocean ruin chests.
The diamond requirement for duplicating templates does make them feel more valuable, but I agree with the suggestion of others that instead of requiring 7 diamonds and 1 block (netherrack, cobblestone, etc.), it should be swapped for 7 blocks and 1 diamond, especially since that seems to more closely resemble the icons for the templates.
I like that the armor trim templates are rare and desireable loot without just being "enchanted gear but stronger" and that older structures are getting loot that makes them worth looking for. I think the chances of getting trims in a chest should be more proportional to the rarity of the structure and the number of chests they contain. Obviously more trims from more places would be nice in the future. Prismarine and glow ink as trim materials would be neat.
I see lots of people asking for gold trims to pacify piglins, but what about making the netherite trim cause your items to become fire/lava proof? I know the point of the trims is purely cosmetic but using an entire netherite ingot is quite expensive. This change would only serve one use, and thats to keep the items themselves which you have worked hard for safe from destruction
Note on the GUI for the blacksmith's table: a pure standing armor stand looks unnatural. It should be in the black square like a player or a horse in an inventory.
The mechanics for finding smithing templates is excellent. With this addition, almost every structure in the game has been elevated with a new, unique, item. Exploration has benefits again!
Diamonds are something that, unless you are on a server with an economy, that I just ignore at this point. This gives diamonds a use again, and I think the price is pretty close to right.A few improvements this mechanic would be:
(1) a series of a buffs to armor that is related to either the trim material or/and trim design or/and armor piece. For example, an armor set fully trimmed in gold could prevent piglins from being angered.
(2) Add echo shards / eye of the sea as a potential trim materials.- In improvement 1 above, a fully trimmed echo shard armor set could provide the ability to have the warden not be able to hear your individual movements allowing you more mobility when in ancient cities.
- An eye of the sea trimmed turtle helmet could provide improved / infinite underwater breathing.
Based on those changes, some less used items to the game would receive some more love and attention, and the added personal choice could also have small boosts towards how we set up armor and reward us for making multiple sets.

Maybe with what the crafting recipe is for the smithing templates and how pricy it, maybe have the recipe changed to 1 template 4 diamonds and 4 of the respective corresponding blocks and it gives 3 in return. I feel the 7 diamonds in exchange for 1 more doesn’t feel fair to all players in their own play styles. Getting the templates should feel like the reward itself and of what rarity one manages to obtain, then when people own them, they can make more. And for something that doesn’t have gameplay value and is mainly cosmetic, it should probs be a bit easier for all player who’d want to customize their style. It shouldn’t feel like a late game thing as a lot of people are starting to say it is. Please consider this piece of suggestion.
[block] [diamond] [block]
[diamond] [template] [diamond]
[block] [diamond] [block]=> x3 templates

I like the new armor trimming feature and searching for various smithing templates will be fun. But using the same feature to craft netherite armor feels needlessly complicated, inelegant, irrelevant, and hard to remember.
There are other ways to make netherite armor more valuable and rare, namely by raising the price. Allow players to craft netherite armor the same way they craft gold and iron armor, by using ingots. And use a crafting bench to make netherite armor, not a smithing table.
Yes, netherite armor will be much more expensive this way. But isn't that the point?
By requiring players to conquer multiple bastions with piglin brutes in order to get a full set of netherite armor you're not making the armor harder to get, you're dissuading many players from ever trying to do that. Reward players who are persistent enough to mine a lot of ancient debris, at the same rate of four netherite scraps to an ingot, by letting them earn the best armor in the game through hard work.I think having the ability to add glow ink to the armor trims to make the trims glow in the dark and just more visable at night would be really cool. Not sure if that should need a template of its own but if so maybe that template could be found in ocean ruins as right now there's not much point to look in their chests. If that's too common it could also be found in buried treasure. Other than that the trims are pretty perfect. I like the high diamond cost making them still rare and unable to be farmed for, on top of giving diamonds something else to be used for. A lot of people are suggesting they should apply to elytra as well but I think if anything the elytra should just have its own skin/customization to it separate from armor trims. Great job overall on the trims!
I suggest having trims for weapons/tools and horse armor. Also, being able to make trims glow with the glowing ink sac.
About templates "representing where have you been", I think the patterns doesn't quite show that intuitively. You have to memorize the trim and where it's found to know where that player was. I thought the eye trim chesplate had an emerald instead of an eye (before knowing its template name). This could be solved adding a bit more detail or something more obvious about the location they come from.
Copying them it's expensive and THAT'S FINE. Diamonds doesn't have that many uses, you don't even need to use them to craft your gear bcs you can use villagers. I'm sure that most of the players have enough diamonds stored to make their trims and, even if not, you can get enough through mining.
About trims giving some advantage: Nope, they exist to customize your armor. If there was any effect there also will be some "it looks good, but its effect isn't that useful" situations. Even making piglins neutral to gold trim will condition everyone to wear at least one of them. Also they are only stripes and making piglins neutral with that makes as much sense as bartering with gold nuggets.
maybe give trimmed armor a better use like give abilitys. like a gold trim would keep piglins away like the armor does, netherite trim would make armor fire proof, and can we please have trims on wepons and tools? it would make tools feel more custom as well
1. Smithing templates feels challenging enough to get and for endgame players/midgame, definitely encourages more exploration.
2. the diamond requirement NEEDS to be kept. Diamonds don't really have a "sink" other than armor and tools, so yes, keep the diamond recipe the way it is.
3. Visually, PERFECTO. However, I really hope that this isn't going to be a one and done thing and that more are added with updates.
4. The system oozes creativity with how much you can customize your armor, especially being able to mix and match different pieces.
5. This has to be done for elytra/tools/horse armor. I'm glad that the turtle shell gets to have it but please add it for elytra, players without capes don't have any way to customize their elytras without a cape.
6. Rates can still be tweaked a little bit, but do not have the ability to craft them normally. Being able to find them in chests needs to be keeped if this really is to encourage exploration and the like.
I’m sure others have commented on glowing/gold on piglins but putting netherite template on diamond armor and then converting to netherite gives a cool texture on the armor which is subtle but noticeable as well. Don’t remove this as it is amazing and doesn’t scream obvious like many other ways.
I believe that each type of ore that’s used for the trim should have more to it then an aesthetic feel. Each ore type used as trim on a piece of armor should have different effects and perks to them. Iron trim should have the ability to heal surrounding iron golems. Gold trim could grant you the ability to keep friendly with the piglins. Emeralds could grant you the ability to have villagers follow you if wanted, and maybe even give a slight discount to trades. Diamond could give you give you half a point more durability and netherite could give you a one whole point more durability. Lapis could give you good luck for getting the more rare enchantments. Red stone could grant you longer and stronger portion effects upon drinking them. Copper could grant the ability to harness lightning giving the player a charged effect. The player will have one chance at choosing when and where they will be summoning lightning around them, which will give surrounding players and hostile mobs an electric shock. Amethyst will grant a new effect as well as quartz.
It's really nice that we can preview the armour before confirming the upgrade, would it be possible to split up the individual pieces of armour slots so we can preview a full set of armour? That would make it so we can preview a full set before confirming what we want, you could even put an armour piece that already has a trim on it in a respective slot to have it show up on the armour stands.

This is great! Love this new feature!
A couple suggestions
-gold trims can make piglins docile, but only for a few seconds then they get angry at you. This would only be for players who have all of there armor trimmed with gold. This would allow gold armor to have a use for longer term projects and allow players who just want to get where there going to go somewhere without piglins bothering them. If its on all pieces of armor it is using the same amount of gold as gold boots would.
-Trims for tools, shields, and horse armor (netherrite horse amour?) even if its only 3 pixels on a pickaxe I feel it would be appreciated and would allow for player to differentiate between a silk touch and a fortune pickaxe etc.
-Trims that keep track of stats (damaged blocked for armor, blocks walked for boots, damage delt or player or mobs killed for swords or axes, and blocks mined for pickaxes and shovels) I feel that this would be a good way to implement stats for bedrock where you cant see it
-Maybe some of these last two would be in structures, but maybe have some of them craftable or having a few in villages to introduce them to players who don't often venture to harder structures
- I also have seen suggestions using glow ink or echoshards to give them a use and add glow armor which would be helpful for find people at night while find mobs. Also adding one to the igloo to give that more of a use. Also potentially one pattern that looks like a crown on the helmet piece.

Hey! I just wanted to touch on some things!
-The interface feels really nice. Reminds me of the anvil interface, and it feels like it really fits with the theming of the crafting interfaces.
-The thing that I would like to see the most is an additional slot in the interface to add glow ink to armor trimming. If adding another slot would not be the right way to proceed with it, I could see a system where an armor piece is gilded, and then added back into the smithing table menu with a glow ink sac (or echo shard) to cause the gilding to glow. This process would be similar to how potions interact with redstone, glowstone, gunpowder, or dragon's breath in that the ingredients are added back into their crafting interface to be modified.
- In addition, I could see an option to remove the coating by placing the armor item in a crafting menu with an axe, removing the gilding at the cost of some of the armor and axe's durability. This would be similar to the way that axes are used to remove wax from copper blocks.
-The only other comment I have is that many of the boot items feel very similar. With the restrictions of the small texture area, would it be possible to change some of the similar boot patterns to something that stands out just a bit more from the others?
Please add some of the templates to be also obtained through wandering traders (especially rare ones like mansion template). It would be a cool way to make it somewhat reasonable to get them in large multiplayer servers.
from my limited creative testing. (looting around 5 ocean ruins chests, 15 nether fortress chests, and 20+ bastion chests) I can safely say that the trims are WAY too rare, only finding a grand total of one trim (snout) and two upgrades. for large multiplayer servers this could be disastrous, leading to heavy "inflation" where only a select few people will have the luxury of using trims on their armor. the replicating recipe should definitely be swapped, one diamond and seven ingredients (the netherite upgrade should use ancient debris or honestly anything other than netherrack) or the rarity should be decreased by a LOT (or have some way of making them renewable)
I'm very happy with that change, but... maybe that should be give an buff of anything, or like everyone says , give an feature of Gold/Diamond/Netherite for example:
Netherite: Give to the other armors Lava proof.
Diamond/Emerald: Give more Durability.
Gold: Make piglins neutral.
Lapis: Maybe... ¿Enchantibility?
And... i don't have more ideas for other minerals.Registered User commentedComment actions Permalink- Edited

Templates being single-use makes them feel much too precious to use frivolously on armor that will eventually break. If their purpose is self-expression, they should feel like less important of a decision when you consider using them. If their purpose is prestige / showing off, then they're okay, I suppose.
What if instead of being single-use, Templates had a durability bar that went down each time you used one? Doesn't have to be a ton of durability. Just enough to use it a few times.
And instead of duplicating a Template you would just repair the Template by using an Anvil? If you want to keep the "7 diamonds" cost, you could make an item called the "Blank Template" (or something like that) and have that be the repair item for any Templates being repaired in the Anvil.

- How challenging is it to find Smithing Templates, and is it rewarding?
= Depends on the locations and rarity but very rewarding to me that like customization!
- Does searching the world for Smithing Templates feel adventurous?
= Yes it does, it's very encouraging
- Do the diamond requirements for copying Smithing Templates make them feel rare or special?
= Yes they're, and finally there's real reason to grind diamond ores thus make mining more integral to the game!
- Does applying armor trims with the redesigned Smithing Table feel intuitive?
= Intuitive enough, it's small difference from before (and giving Bastion a reason to visit)
- How do armor trims look visually?
= Very cool! Though I wish there's one more trim only found when fishing to there's more reason to go fishing
- Are you able to be creative when combining different types of patterns on separate armor pieces?
= I'm not a creative type but I'd love these combinations so much!P.S. You should be able to brought Netherite Upgrade Smithing Tempate (NUST) from Wandering Trader (with very low chance and decreased every time they're killed) in case finding NUST in Bastion chests isn't possible in multiplayer servers

So while I feel in Singleplayer worlds and on multiplayer servers that reset regularly this is a fine change, there is a massive barrier for those of us who run public servers which don't reset often, if at all. Smithing Templates as aesthetic pieces are fine, but Netherite Upgrade Templates are often going to be extremely difficult to obtain as the nether is very well explored and widely looted. A simple fix for these communities to this would see Netherite Upgrade Templates craftable with Netherite Scraps and some other ingredients; I would propose 6 scrap, 2 gold ingots and 1 magma cream. Alternatively, bringing down the cost of duplicating only Netherite Upgrade Templates, perhaps to 4 dia and 3 netherrack or 3 dia and 4 netherrack.
Please make leather armor also customizable with trims, being able have a shirt with custom color and also custom trim would be fun, it doesn't matter if it's useless or a waste, it's a fun option to explore and if a player tries to do that it will be fun to see it is possible
There should be a way to un-trim armor so u can change to whatever trims u want, you could add a new functionality to the grindstone to remove trims!
I feel like applying a trim should give a very minor durability boost and perhaps provide a small knockback resistance when applied to non-netherite armor.
Currently, there's not actually much reason to use trims in normal survival unless the player is very rich already- so having some sort of small buff from applying trims would be nice. Taking it to the next level, perhaps a separate buff for each type?
Here are some of the ideas I came up with, but of course they're probably very unbalanced, just things that can give you an idea of what I mean. And of course perhaps it's just the expensive ones that give buffs-- Iron = More durrability
- Copper = Makes the player more likely to be struck by lightning, but also gives minor knockback resistance
- Lapis = Also makes it cheaper to apply enchants
- Gold = Makes it cheaper to apply enchants to the item (no piglin stuff)
- Diamond = +1 armor toughness
- Emerald = Villages will give a very minor discount
- Redstone = Potions effects (positive and negative) will last slightly longer
- Amethyst = Cosmetic only
- Quartz = Reduced durability by 10%, +1 armor toughness
- Netherite = Knockback resistance, +1 armor toughness, and increased durability (netherite is still expensive)
Overall these are fantastic but we should be able to use these for #1 horse armor #2 elytra and may be even tools and other things. This is definitly something that can be built on alot!
I would also love if glowsquid ink could be used to make the trims glow, that would really make that sought after resource

PLEASE, leave the price of copying templates this high. Diamonds are basically useless once you’ve got the whole gear and a mending villager. Because as someone suggest using recipe with 1,2,4 diamonds does not feel like you are crafting something really valuable, especially compared to the way you get them, it HAS to still be challenging even when you’ve got one, as of 1.19 diamonds are VERY easy to find in caves, so, if you want to customize your armor you have to put some effort. Also that price will encourage players to go to the deepest parts of the world and explore caves even more
Also agree with some others who suggest adding buffs to the armor with trimming material, at least for gold(piglins will not attack you) and netherite(will not burn), so then the price will be even more reasonable
I think the textures of the templates could be improved. Right now they look to elaborate and don't fit in with other textures in the game in my opinion. I think the patterns/ shapes on them look too contrasted to the rest of minecrafts textures. I feel like these could be smoothed out or even replaced with a general texture used by all of them but with different colors to match the structure that they are from. The netherite upgrading one specifically does not look like it could go in a bastion chest, especially with a the blue arrow. I think the arrow looks a little cheesy and not like something that would be created by ancient nether creatures. given the ancient status of netherite, I think that the template should look its part. This example is just for the netherite one, but I think all of them could use the same advice. I think the "Dune", "Tide", and "Rib" templates do a good job and have good variation whereas the "Ward", "Sentry", and "Snout" dont quite work with their limited resolution. Otherwise I think the concept of them is a very good place to start adding more incentives to exploration.
Most of the armor trims look amazing, there's something for everyone! There is limitless potential for customizability.
Regarding the issue of duplicating the Smithing Templates, the expense makes them feel special, but not rare. There are two solutions I can think of to remedy this:
1) Giving the armor trimming a functional purpose (depending on material) could make the expense of duplicating worth it.
2) Making Smithing Templates non-consumable (like banner patterns). To offset this, the frequency of them appearing in loot chests could be reduced. This could make them feel more unique, like the beloved music discs.
The Smithing Table feels intuitive, but the netherite upgrade system may be confusing to newer players. The additional item required to upgrade gear may deter players from doing so, as it is already expensive and many might feel netherite isn't worth the cost (when one could craft several diamond items with what is required to craft the Templates). Furthermore, players playing on older worlds have potentially already raided nearby bastions in their world, making it even harder to create new netherite items.
Overall, the concept of armor trimming is wonderful. The increased functionality of the smithing table is well-deserved, but perhaps there is a way to increase the reward for the player.
it doesnt feel like it has any applied storytelling features for singleplayer
the templates will work best on faction worlds where cloning it may be dire as there are limited numbers of them if they even are present. the 4% chance in certain structures like jungle temples makes applying what would be useful about them... no different from banner patterns and having them on shields. if the template doesnt have an effect the coloring material should have some passive gain.having the template itself structure how much extra durable an armor set can be useful especially if one day the templates can be stacked (you can be swarn to two factions and be a mediary between them)
having most of the templates be in bastions make sense relative to minecraft legends but have no tie in making our own story as plenty of people have yet to even access the nether because the block gradients arent worth the risks and having templates be end game exclusive will make the event of finding and using one less impactful. especially if it doesnt garuntee any gameplay change.
