Let's talk about Armor Trims!

The upcoming 1.20 update will introduce a way to customize your armor with a new feature - armor trims - and you can try them out right now! Armor trims come in various patterns which you can find in the form of smithing templates hidden across the Minecraft world and can then be crafted with the smithing table in all manner of creative combinations!

To find out more about the feature check out the latest snapshot changelog. 

As with any new feature, we want to hear your feedback as we continue to fine-tune armor trims ahead of the release. Alongside your general feedback, we also have some specific questions which we’re hoping to help us iron out the design.  

  • How challenging is it to find Smithing Templates, and is it rewarding?
  • Does searching the world for Smithing Templates feel adventurous?
  • Do the diamond requirements for copying Smithing Templates make them feel rare or special?
  • Does applying armor trims with the redesigned Smithing Table feel intuitive?
  • How do armor trims look visually?
  • Are you able to be creative when combining different types of patterns on separate armor pieces?

    I won't have the chance to check this out for a while longer, but I think it would be neat to be able to apply this to Elytra. Maybe the trims could give unique patterns to elytra, so they can be customized without the need of a cape!

    Not much feedback to give as of now, but it would be neat if trims could be applied to horse armor and even elytra.

    If you ask me, copying smithing templates is way too expensive, especially since armor trims are purely cosmetic. It should be done with something cheaper like gold in place of diamonds.

    Can there also be an option to do this with shields? As well as different material tiers of shields go up to netherite?

    I think that maybe armor templates shouldn't be destroyed when used but instead, be put into a broken state like an elytra. Then you would, of course, be able to repair them with related materials. I think this would be better than the copy system that is in the current snapshot as with it being possible to copy templates I feel that they lose some amount of value. I mean imagine If you could make copies of music discs; imagine how less rare they would feel if you could just have 20 copies of Pigstep all because one of your friends found a single copy and proceeded to give them out; that would just ruin the point of music discs and I think this same logic applies to templates.

    It would be great if having the entire Netherite Armor Set with a Golden Armor Trim could prevent the piglins from getting angry
    I know that all the trims are only visual but making an exception I think that the netherite templete + diamond requirements + gold ingots cost worth it
    In addition, the new requirements to upgrade to netherite would bring as a benefit that feature that many of us have wanted for a long time. Honestly I got too excited looking at today's snapshot thinking something like this had already been included
    please make it happen

    1. I think it would be a good idea to put "bright ink" on the colored patterns! I would give the squid ink another use! and the players would be more Shiny!

    I personally think that golden trim should count as something that pacifies piglins. I know trims are supposed to be only cosmetic, but that would be rather convenient.

    I think smithing templates should just be non-consumable. The copying system is tedious and expensive, and it's not very clear how it works without using the crafting guide. Although I think the netherite upgrade template specifically does work as a consumable. Otherwise, fantastic additions!

    Please let us use echo shards as well! Its such a pretty color and that would give it another use... Maybe instead of the lapis? Which we can use for enchanting, dye and trading already. 

    Echo shards don't have mich use for Hardcore mode players and once you have one or two compasses anyway, you don't use any more shards!

    If I had some critical feedback it would be to allow this system to incorporate custom models into armor. It’s currently impossible to implement custom armor models, especially using something like CustomModelData. Now is a perfect opportunity to introduce a better way of creating armor model assets to the game that would be customizable in resource and data packs.

    Been trying out the new feature for around 30 mins after updating current world. The following are the answers to the questions. I found 1 template only, and the challenge to get a template I believe is okay. However, I don't find it specifically rewarding or needy to accquire the templates. If I'm on a multiplayer server then the incentive might be slightly larger but currently I'm playing singleplayer and I don't find decoration to armor any appealing nor rewarding to me.  During my quest to get a template, I don't find it specifically adventurous as it was always the same old Minecraft adventure, and to be honest I feel quite bored and pointless to get something purely decorative. No matter what material the templates require, having to get something purely decorative in the first was quite pointless, especially in singleplayer. I do believe some use can be added to each template and their respective materials, so that the incentive is much larger and the adventure can be more rewarding. For example, the sentry trim can give a limited time of resistance effect to the player, with the level of resistance depending on the material being used to make the trim; the spire armor trim put on the helmet can be used to prevent endermen aggressiveness when looking in their eyes, with the chance of prevention increasing as the material used differ. Giving armor trims uses can greatly increase the incentive of getting one and make the game more interesting and creative.

    The Armor Stand in the GUI should display the armor piece when you put it in the armor slot even without the material. Also it should be lit from the front (currently it's from the back)

    Maybe don’t make it so you have to find the netherite ones it’s already hard to get netherite now it’s even harder

    As some mentioned earlier, PLEASE make it possible to use glow ink for these templates so that they glow in the dark, it would be JUST CRAZY

    The diamond for for duplication is fine, but I think it should be reversed, with 7 blocks of the base material and 1 diamond.

    7 diamond for the armour trims feels a little excessive. For the Netherite upgrade you could argue about it being tied to in game progression, but for cosmetics that feels a little unfair comparatively.

    The comparison I would like to make is that it costs 8 diamonds to make a diamond chest piece, but would also cost 7 diamonds to add some gold details to some boots (4 diamonds) if you want to copy the pattern first for a total of 11 diamonds. That personally feels too much for what is only a small detail a player has chosen for personalisation.

    Adding options for Elytra as well would be a positive too.

    Echo shards would be cool to add as a trim option. Would give them a use for people who don't have a use for the respawn compass.

    I would suggest to add echo shards as a way to add a sculk colour on the armor. It would be great to explore ancient cities for echo shards too.

    The Armor stand in the Smithing Table's Menu shows up with arms despite regular Armor stands not having arms (In java)...

    I really like the new feature, here are some ideas I had when experimenting with it:

    -as it is not that easy to get a fully customized armor, maybe give the armor some type of effect and dont make it only a visual difference

    -copper oxidizes in armors

    -Piglins dont attack players with full gold customized armors

    -horse armor and elytras should be customizable (maybe even Swords, tridents and tools)

    -echo shards could get a new use as a dark/turquoise dye 

    -give woodland mansion patterns a 100% spawnchance in one chest in the mansion as the structure is really rare and it could be frustrating to travel 10000 blocks just to find no pattern

     

    I think its great that its harder now to get full netherite, I also really enjoy that you have to journey through the whole minecraft world to get all of the patterns.

     The way the menu works is weird and inconsistent with the rest of the game, players should be able to input items before and after adding a smithing template to the smithing table. Small gripe, but immediately found myself frustrated with not being able to immediately shift click in armor.

    Acredito que seja uma otima adição porém poderia adicionar vantagens como speed e ate mesmo haste semelhante ao que o tinkers faz pois é muito dificil conseguir tais trims e so ser algo visual é broxante

    Would be good if developers will add some template for Wandering Trader, so he can be more useful now?
