To be honest, scrap any existing weapons, scrap the hoe, just make a completely new weapon unrelated to any other called the "spear" and give it its own unique look and functionality.

So that they can be used as effective mounts on land as well as on lava. The Strider's stench is too much for the Hoglins' strong sense of smell.
