When you right-click using an axe on a Chiseled Bookshelf it could do one or both of these:

    1. Adds/Removes space for more books, so you’ll have multiple different states (Example: State 1; 6 books, state 2; 9 books & state 3; 3 books).
    2. When used on a solid side it will create shelves on that side (Example: Right-clicking the back side will open space to put 6 books, so you’ll have the front and the back to put more books).

    Suggestions:

    • The storage needs to be buffed, both due to the visual difference between the regular bookshelf and the fact that you can already store 27 books in block, using a barrel. Having for example 16, 8 per row would match redstone signal from a compator nicely.
    • If upped, the need for point-to-the-book-you-want-and-get-that-out increases a lot. Even with just 6 like in 22w42a, it's too annoying storing books this way, as if you need the first you put in, you need to get all 6 out.
    • Comparator needs to be calculated by fill-level for parity with other container blocks. The mechanics in 22w42a makes no sense to use, what so ever, and is really counterintuitive.

Clicking on them should open an Inventory like a chest with 6 slots in a 3x2 grid. Then you can choose which book you want to get off the shelf

I would really like it if more items were allowed to be put into the bookshelves, with things like potions/water bottles, skulls, or bundles able to put on the shelf, allowing extra texture variety as well as a fun way to give gifts, make puzzles, and prank your friends

It would be cool if dispensers could insert a book into a chiseled bookshelf

I really hope that the chiseled bookshelves will have a ui that can be accessed by crouching then interacting, as currently the only way to get to a book that isn't the last one placed, is to remove until you get to the book you want.

If theres a possibility for texture varriance besides number of books in it, chizeled Bookshelves should be able to store potions and bottles.

I have a couple ideas for the chiseled bookshelf, first off all I think it is a good addition to the game already, but there are a couple that if changed would be better.
    1. Make it interact with redstone.
If you could be able to put items in and out with hopper(minecarts), dispensers, then you can for example easily improve for the door showed in Minecraft Live by being able to put the book in a hopper on the other side of the door and that goes back to the chiseled bookshelf to refill it and close the door again. This allowes you to easily create a system to close the door at any time you want. For example if you want to let more people through you won't be annoyed by having a too short clock to let everyone through. Another example is to easily sort enchanted from a farm so people that aren't so good at redstone don't have to watch a complicated tutorial about that.
    2. Being able to put/take books somewhere else than the first available/full spot. (Only when they are manually put in the bookshelf)
This could be done by if you look at the spot on the bookshelf while your putting the book in it goes there, when the spot is full you get the book that was there
This is good for decoration purposes and maybe people that maybe want to create pixel art with it.
    3. When you rename a book and put it in the bookshelf a name tag will pop up if you look at it or are in a particular range from the bookshelf.
This could help with finding a book back when you have a lot of books stored.

You should be able to have 2 different states of the chiseled bookshelf.

    State 1:
A comperator takes the amount of books in the chiseled bookshelf as redstone output.

    State 2:
A comparator takes the last spot interracted with as redstone output. Like it is now

I think the default state should be 1 cause that feels more intuitive and is easier to understand.
You can change the state by shift right clicking or powering the block with redstone.

I'm in the camp these new shelves should augment enchanting, either with a new block that will copy spells from the shelves (costing more XP and Lapis) or in modifying the Randomness of the Enchanting Table, potentially adding Treasure books into the list and increasing odds of high level enchants. Which honestly is my biggest hope for this block is an update on enchanting. And would make useful instead of just a decorative storage compared to a barrel or chest.

A small GUI for the shelves would be easier to work with, or when looking at a book you get a tag on what it is. This should only work for player made shelves to keep the neat idea for dungeon libraries.
Going up to 8 books would be a perk, and more in line with other gameplay. And would require a little more work to power up an enchanting block.

They need a different name. Why “chiseled”?

I love the idea of a customizable and functional bookshelf in minecraft! I have a few tweak ideas I would love to suggest though, I have seen others mentioning it too:
-They should have a GUI like hoppers and barrels so I can see and specifically take out books that you want
-The books should appear depending on where they are in the gui
-Each book should have a specific color thats displayed no matter which slot it appears in, this way players can make full red or full green bookshelves, not just random ones.

Hope to see this idea get more refined, and looking forward to see what you are coming up next!

I don't feel like the name is on-point. Maybe "empty bookshelf?" It would be cool if you could pick it up after putting books in it, a bit like a shulker box specifically for books. It might make gathering loot and grinding for enchants a little bit easier. Also, I made a post about how putting specific enchanted books in the chiseled bookshelf around an enchanting table should increase your chances of getting that enchant from the enchanting table.

    Suggestions:
I would love for the bookshelves to have more control where I place the book and where I take it out from.
A GUI would be a simple solution for that.

And if possible, that should also mean that 1 book would have the same color and shape in any of the slots.
Maybe could use dye or a some sort of book binding bench to change the appearance of specific books.

We should be able to store music discs within chiseled book shelves they should have a slightly different texture as well.

    I have 3 suggestions:

1-Please make it so that the book shelf texture changes based on the wood you craft it with, it’ll make is so much fun to build with and will match a lot better in different atmospheres, if you do this please consider doing the same for the normal bookshelf

2-Please make it so I can take out any book instead of ALWAYS the first book

3- some sort of symbol on the spin to represent what type of book it is

It is great that we can detect the number of books stored using a comparator, but it would be better if it would actually detect the number of books rather than the last slot you interacted with. You can have an empty bookshelf with a redstone output of one, because it appears that the output doesn't come from the books. That means, you can also have a bookshelf with 5 books but an output of 6.

Well, I saw that, you can right click the chiseled bookshelf from any side, that isn't amazing, my ideia is for the block be right clicked only on the front side, and when taking/placing book, it's gonna be placed In the slot you're looking at.

Delightful! Finally, bookshelves can be used for something much more than just building blocks.

Maybe Librarians can pick up books from one Chiseled Bookshelf and move them to another?

What if we could find chiseled bookshelves in villages and strongholds, and they could have books inside them that tell legends, and/or clues to some ancient treasure that will be perfect for the lost Arceology update?

There should be a redstone book, crafted with a book and redstone dust.

So the chiseled bookshelf only emits a redstone signal with it, and the signal stength according to which slot its in.

Chiseled Bookshelves should be easier to break the less full they are. A full one should be comparable to a regular Bookshelf but an empty one should break much, much quicker.

I saw a twitter post about adding a nametag that describes the book you're looking at. I think that, combined with a spine texture that changes depending on the type of book would be neat.

I also think that they should have some type of integration with enchanting. Maybe if you have a bunch of bookshelves with a specific enchantment on the books, it'll decrease the probability of getting that enchant in the table. (never making it impossible, but making it a bit rarer, since you already have enough of that book to fill up bookshelves)

I REALLY want this to be a thing. This could make a very good library.
