I have a few issues with how Chiselled Bookshelves act in 22w42a.

First, I don't like that you always take out the last book, it makes getting just one book out of the shelves extremely annoying, especially if it's the first enchanted book of the six, as that's six unstackable items, and you then have to put them back in.

Second, on a similar concept, I don't like how there's only one front texture regardless of which book is put in. It would make library builds quite annoying to find a specific book type in. Perhaps if there was some way to have it so depending on the book, it'll have a different design, allowing for all enchanted books, written books, writable books/book and quills, and plain books, to be recognizable at a glance, and combined with the first part, pulled out when needed.

As a combination thought of those two ideas, possibly hovering over a book in a bookshelf could show you the name, if renamed (or a named written book), or the enchantment for enchanted books? It could get slightly intrusive, but item frames have something similar already.

Thirdly, the sound books make is oddly clunky to me, sounds way more wooden than I'd expect, it could be a bit softer feeling to represent the sounds of paper hitting the shelf, rather than what feels like wood hitting wood.

The feature definitely has a lot of potential, but it feels a bit overly restricted as it is currently.

i want to give a suggestion about the newly added "chiseled bookshelf"

    it has 2 problems

1- if you try to get the book you first placed you need to get all of the books instead of this i think it would be better if we could place books to wherever we want and get them individually

2- you can't quite distinguish the books on the shelf i think it would be nice if stuff like enchanted books, book and quil had different textures to distinguish them from one another

    Here's a suggestion!
Chiseled bookshelves (and classic bookshelves) of every wood type in the game! This would fit with the update, as the different variants would help to increase the levels of storytelling, and it would be a nice quality of life feature. I hope any mojang employee that sees this would consider it, as I'd love to see it in the next update

Hoppers should interact with chiseled bookshelves

They should interact with hoppers. This could be useful in redstone contraptions and would allow you to have chests full of books that would automatically "re-stock" the bookshelves with books.

Old bookshelves can now be removed from the game, similar to how zombie pigmen were removed with the addition of zombified piglins.

The texture of the filled shelves is always the same, I can't remember what is where. And in order to take out the first book, I have to shake out the whole block, the shelves do not work like that.

With the chiseled bookshelf we need a way to differentiate the books on the shelf. When we can color them we will have the ability to tell them apart so we do not spend hours taking books off shelves trying to figure out which is which. Leather is a material that is able to be dyed so this makes sense because Minecraft books are all made of leather.

Please add all wood variants too book shelves as well as chiseled book shelves.

It is a nice addition but it is a bit under exploited. I mean I thought we would be able to put our book on the spot we want. An interface would be really noice too, we have no way to recognize which book is in what spot.

Can Enchanted Books show the enchantment glint when placed in the Chiseled Bookshelf?

It would be nice if you would be able to choose which book you want and not only the last inserted

Minor thing: When copying a chiseled bookshelf with nbt-data and then placing it back down, it doesn't show the books, but drops them when destroyed.

Interaction with the chiseled bookshelf should be tweaked so that the player can grab the book which is targeted by the crosshair instead of taking the last one which was put in.

Edit: And please no UI as some are suggesting. Direct interaction with the chiseled bookshelf is very intuitive.

Edit 2: I'm not sure about this one but maybe the name of the book should be displayed (like a name) when you focus a book with the crosshair?

You should be able to grab any book from the shelf. It is very annoying to have to take every book off the shelf just to get the first one. Also when you hover over the book it should display the name of the book.

It would be great if the chiseled bookshelves didn't require silk touch. I understand why normal bookshelves need silk touch, because of the books, but the chiseled bookshelves are empty by default. I think it makes sense for empty chisel bookshelves to drop without silk touch. Chiseled shelves with books should drop the bookshelf and its contents separately.

    - It is a shame how clunky the interactions are with the bookshelves, as in order to get out the first book of a full bookshelf you need to remove all the others. This is a really awful design choice imo. Either you should be able to remove the book that your crosshair is over, or give it an inventory that you can open. With the latter option, you can also hover over the book to see what it is without removing it which would be useful.

    - I think it would be better if the bookshelf could hold 10 books that are each two pixels wide with a gap between them instead of only 6 books (or even 12 with no gaps) as this would make them more useful for storage as well as decoration.

    - It would be cool if enchanted books have an enchantment glint when they are on the bookshelf, or another way to differentiate enchanted books from regular books.

    - With the introduction of the chiseled bookshelf I think it is about time to add bookshelves for each wood variant

Chiseled bookshelves should contribute levels towards enchantment tables based on how many books they hold!

You could remove books from them to lower the level of enchantment you get, instead of placing torches between the enchantment table and bookshelves like you do now.

Please consider adding hopper interactions, it would be great if you could automatically add your collection of enchanted books to a bunch of chiseled bookshelves. You could also use it for aesthetic reasons like creating a magic library where the amount of books in a bookshelf is constantly changing.

As others have already said, perhaps enchanted books should have their own unique textures.

Not only that, but allow us to place and take away books from the "slot" we're looking at.

I also think that chiseled bookshelves should have unique mechanics when near enchanting tables.

For example, if an enchanting table is surrounded by a chiseled bookshelf filled with enchanted books, then the table is more likely to enchant tools/armor with whatever enchantments are stored in the shelves. Of course treasure enchants will not work. This may better incentivize the players to explore and essentially "level up" their enchanting table set with the desired enchantments

Storing only 6 books feels very wrong for a game where everything is base-8

I have multiple suggestions about the new chiseled bookshelves:
    1. Changing the name to something like "bookrack" or so. The new bookshelves aren't chiseled like stone bricks, sandstone or netherbrick.
    2. Let us place and take books from any slot in the rack. Perhaps even with different textures based on book type. Blank Books, Writable/Written Books, Knowledge Books  (if you give them in creative), Enchanted Books
    3. Bookracks should count toward enchantment table levels, based on how many and what type of book is inside of them. E.g. Full of blank or written books = +1 level, half blank/written; half enchanted books = +2 levels, full of enchanted books = +3 levels.

Different textures for the type of book stored (book, book and quill, writen book, enchanted book)
And being able to take the book from the slot you're looking at. This would make the bookshelves much more useful, easy to use and also allow for some fantastic customization of libraries etc.

Chiseled bookshelves when full should power enchantment tables.

Give bookshelves a chest UI so you can tell what is inside of them.

you should be able to choose what position the book is in. for example 6 books fit on a bookshelf.  i put 3 at the top and 1 on the bottom left and 1 in the bottom right, the book on the bottom left should look like its fell over like the original bookshelves.

another example should be, if I want to place 2 books on top and 2 books on the bottom. what I'm getting at is bookshelves should be more customizable with some sort of tribute to the original with the knocked-over book until a book is put in that place.

i also think with this could come books that are put on their side. like if I put one in the middle of the shelf (top or bottom) the book should lay down flat as if just placed there.

As said before, chiseled bookshelf should have or:

a chest GUI so you can pick the desired book

just any other way to get the specific book you want instead of having to get rid of all books to get the book you want.

I think the Comparator behavior on Chiseled Bookshelves is really confusing at the moment. A similar idea would be to indicate the last active slot (e.g. the last Book that was placed, not removed). The output is still different from Chests and is very similar to the current one, but it's also familiar because Lecterns behave almost the same way when interacting with Comparators.
