Basalt is an ignious rock that appears in volcanic islands, and places like Jeju Island in South Korea can have these jagged basalt pillars that appear on the shore.
The Minecraft Basalt texture does reflect this structure, but the way of generating it is just pure nonsense. I get why the feature was first released. Basalt was revealed back when 1.16 was announced, and back then, the block was tied to the Soul Sand Valley. However, not even before the update was even released, the Basalt Deltas biome was released, and that had a volcanic theme instead of a soul theme. Even worse, smooth basalt started generating in amethyst geodes in 1.17. Does this mean amethyst is related to souls? Do we have to craft game theories of the nether seeping into the overworld? What's even the point of having soul soil as a requirement for basalt generation?
Basalt should generate when lava touches blue ice no matter what block is below it. If you place blue ice in a lava lake, it should be covered with basalt on all its exposed sides, and if you place lava on blue ice, it should instantly turn into basalt similar to how it instantly turns into obsidian underwater.
This could oversimplify basalt bridge generators, which could annoy some hardcore redstoners, but keeping this arbitrary requirement based on an outdated lore should not justify adding complexity just for the challenge. In fact, challenge could be restored with even more complicated designs.
