The idea is to add functional effects to tools and armor that are independent of enchantments. The smithing table would be used to attach the add-ons to the item in question, using the same basic interface as for adding netherite to diamond tools.
All tools, weapons, or armor would have a "gem" slot (but not really limited to just gems). Some possibilities include: adding an Eye of Ender which would teleport the item back to your spawn point if it drops as an item, consuming the Eye in the process; adding redstone that would temporarily power a block when used on it (not suitable for armor); adding an emerald could affect villager trades or prices, such as opening additional trade options; amethyst might block poison effects, being consumed in the process; lapis might block blindness in a similar fashion. Some items could function as wards to discourage certain mobs from approaching (unless you attack them, probably), the way creepers try to avoid cats (maybe cats can drop hairballs you add to your armor, making the creeper say gross, bye). Adding wool to armor could give it added protection against freezing damage. Some add-ons might have purely aesthetic effects, like banners on shields, where they could show up as a badge or patch on your armor.
