In a recent video titled “The Secrets of Minecraft: How We Invented Frogs” Mojang stated they are a pro nature game and that they don’t want to hurt an animals reputation through its appearance in Minecraft.
This means that no hostile real world animals will be added to the game and Mojang is environmentally conscious with their decisions, hence the decision to remove fireflies from The Wild Update.
However there are some issues with this logic that I’d like to discuss and unpack including double standards for what mobs can and cannot be added into Minecraft.
Mojang says that hostile mobs need to be fantasy creatures, despite this polar bears were deemed fit for Minecraft and were added to the game. As per Mojangs logic polar bears should not have been added since they are hostile real world creatures.
Another issue is that Minecraft is a game that encourages the use and consumption of animal products such as meat, leather and wool. Players have also exploited red stone mechanics to replicate inhumane factory farms such as those found in real life.
Somehow setting animals alight with flames, riding pigs of cliffs and encouraging factory farming is tolerable for an environmentally conscious game. However real world hostile mobs crosses the line.
Moving forward Mojang should focus on making on making the game more fun and improving player experiences.
