Tridents were a neat little addition to Minecraft in the Aquatic Update. Unfortunately, it doesn't really compare to swords and axes (especially with the addition of Netherite). Functionally, the weapon itself is fine. It does decent damage and can be thrown, but the trident Enchantments are what make (and break) tridents. Mainly, the replacement of sharpness/smite/bane for impaling.
Depending on your version, Impaling gives the trident a damage boost. In Java Edition, the damage boost is applied only to aquatic mobs; while in Bedrock Edition, the damage is boosted vs any mob or player in water or rain. As you can see, the trident is much better in the bedrock version for that change alone, and this should be applied to the java version as well. It not only brings the power level and utility of the trident up in java, but it helps with feature parity between the two version.
But, we could go further. Id like to introduce a new status effect: Wetness. Wetness basically just marks the player as in contact with water. If they are in water, they gain wetness and have the effect for a short time after leaving the water. Wetness could also be applied by splash and lingering water potions. This would add a lot more depth to fighting with tridents, where you can get the full power out of your weapon in waterless areas, but only if you have potions to apply it.
Impaling may need to have its damage boost adjusted with this change, but I think it would be a good addition.
