It is not your job to police the community. This shows distrust in the player base and shows distrust in server operators/moderators. I've been admin on a server for many years and whatever problems we had were dealt with by a group of competent adults. Bans, temp bans and appeals were voted on to ensure maximum fairness. We fostered a strong, happy community. We took the time to thoroughly deal with all problems and respected our diverse group of players. It was exhausting, but worth every second.
Every server is its own community. These communities have their own culture, inside jokes, mannerisms. They certainly have bad apples too. However there is an army of dedicated unpaid mods who deal with them.
While the corporate push to try and market the game to be as friendly as Legos is understandable, it's not a packaged toy. It is a vast online universe with more wonders than Earth itself. You'll find the good and bad in Minecraft. But there is a lot more good than bad. As said before, it's because of the dedicated moderators. They in themselves are a strong community. It's the same principle as open source software. Why is it better? Why is Linux the best operating system? Because dedicated enthusiasts commit personal time to work together to release a stellar product. Minecraft is the product of it's community. WE were the ones who told eachother about it, made YouTube videos, showed off incredible builds and encouraged eachother. The IP is yours, but WE are Minecraft!
Even if you add this, we'll all just chat with a 3rd party app instead like Discord. How are you going to moderate that?
no, just no.
First of all, the chat reporting feature doesn't make sense anywhere else other than realms, but I do think there are some ways to make this acceptable.
1. Make it toggleable on private servers.
2. Give the administrators/owners of a server the option to give a recommended age range, such as 10+, 13+, 16+ 18+ etc. In practice the 18+ servers would rely on their own mechanisms to detect, ban and otherwise punish members who are not abiding by the servers rules. On 10+ and 13+ servers the chat reporting would be possible and required in case someone clearly breaks the TOS of Microsoft. And on the 16+, where the lines are often blurred, the chat reporting feature would be recommended, but ultimately left to the server owners.
3. Simply never implement the feature seeing how false bans can often be common in these situations, especially if the context is not fully given. This could happen within a small community who are very comfortable with each other, and who can say certain slurs of communities they belong to (such as the LGBTQ community). If these are all not fully taken into consideration then the system is faulty.
Seeing Microsofts response to the backlash of this feature I would not be surprised if they implement it anyways and watch the game die, but one can only hope they do the right thing by the community.
Just remove this feature, the majority of your player base for java is against it and its honestly one of the biggest wastes of resources this game has seen since been acquired by Microsoft. It was stated when Minecraft account migration was being forced or "encouraged" that Minecraft Java would not change in major ways like this and this goes blatantly against that promise.
Hopefully this one gets past approval pending.
I'll summarize my suggestions and hopefully this one gets accepted:
- Include a quote of the offending chat message in the warning/ban screen so that players know what they actually did, and so that they can't start drama by claiming they were banned for no reason.
- Add a warning or strike system so that players can learn what does and doesn't break the rules without losing their accounts.
- Let reporting players know if their report didn't require action, that way they can learn to not abuse the report feature.
- Let servers manually whitelist banned players. This will allow server owners to stay on their own servers and groups of friends to stay together. This would solve most people's biggest worries with the system.
- If possible, allow individual servers to opt-out. Seriously, many servers, especially private servers between friends, do not want Mojang moderation affecting them.
Without some concessions, this reporting system feels like playing online is a risk to one's minecraft account, along with any servers managed by that account.
Please, please, do something, anything, to reduce our fears about this system. Please.
Why dos my comment about how this could effects server operation got deleted? Not interested in people getting more ideas how bad this is?
Its pretty clear that no one wants this. And those that do want it want it togglable. This kind of thing if handled the wrong way will kill your community.
Chat reporting is a horrible idea that spits on everyone that plays Minecraft. Bans and moderation had been done well by independent servers. The only thing that chat reporting will do is get innocent players banned for no reason. You are ruining the experience for thousands of players and if chat reporting and other horrible moderation ideas are implemented, I will no longer support or use any products from Mojang, that's for sure.
As you've decided to continue with the reporting issue that all of us hate, as a server owner can I file anti-reports on people that get baned, saying that they have been falsely banned?
No thanks.
Everyone knows that this game has gone down after Microsoft took over.
But this might finally be the straw that breaks the camel's back.
This indeed might be a fine feature for realms.
But don't force this garbage on servers.
This is a widely unwanted and unpopular idea.
And I personally will consider quitting the game if you go through with this. The current implementation of the chat reporting system is absolutely terrible.
It is ripe for abuse, because it allows for coordinated groups of players to mass-report messages of players they want to harass. The current system also has a vulnerability that allows for servers to spoof player signatures on chat messages not actually sent by said player. And lastly, the current appeals process / support from Mojang is wholly inadequate to resolve account issues and unjust bans that will caused by these false reports.
This is going to lead to large amounts of innocent players being banned by nefarious actors. As somebody who belongs to a marginalized group, I fear that somebody is going to abuse these tools against me and other people like me.
For my own account safety, I will be staying on 1.18.2 for the foreseeable future. And possibly permanently.
Why are you guys deleting reasonable comments and suggestions on this?
It is unquestionably impossible for global bans to be consistent, accurate, and effective. This won't help third party servers in the slightest and will only serve to harm the playerbase. You haven't received 'questions' you've gotten extremely negative feedback.
Chat report should be a server option in private servers. Servers that choose to not use chat report should be tagged as 18+ and you should get a warning when joining them problem solved and everyone will be happy with this chance. Thx
I think the chat report system is not a practical system. No matter how accomplished the review team is, they won't be able to keep up with the reports. Thousands of reports would be streaming in each day, most of them being from people who want to mess with the system. Also, ever since Minecraft multiplayer was instituted, servers have done an amazing job of moderating themselves, stating the guidelines for their servers, and disallowing anyone who refuses to abide by the rules to play on the server. Each server differs in content, goals, and players. There is no "one size fits all" method to moderate the conduct of the massive Minecraft community. Some servers might want to be kid-friendly, and have warnings for people who swear or use untoward language in chat. Others might adopt an "anything goes" policy. The way to solve the problem is to allow people to continue to self-moderate and take care of themselves. After all, Minecraft is a game where you can do anything you can dream of, and no one is excluded. I don't know what Microsoft wants with this new chat report system, but I am positive that it is a terrible idea.

The implimentation of a chat report feature is unjustified and unwanted.
We do not want chat reporting. Full stop.
If we have to cover the expenses of server hosting out of pocket, we should be afforded 100% complete freedoms over how we wish to moderate that server. Feel free to add an OPTIONAL choice for server owners to enable chat reporting, but forcing it upon everyone in every server against their will is absolutely unacceptable.
There will undoubtedly be immense opposition against the new version, the feature, and the game itself if this feature is added despite the community's clear and overwhelming disdain for it. It will almost certainly create another great divide in the community like the 1.8 combat update, and players will inevitably create workarounds and bypasses to avoid this feature altogether. How will this be entirely human moderated? I could see the first 2-3 weeks being human moderated sure but considering how large the Minecraft player base is. the use of bots will absolutely be implemented at some point in the near future.
you are literally killing minecraft multiplayer and possibly singleplayer, leave java alone use bedrock for experiments or just stop PLEASE.
If this ""feature"" gets added, I will never play this game again.
I can understand this applying to realm servers, however this should not apply to privately ran servers, or at least not be enabled by default.
There wasn't a problem that needed solving. This game and community has succesfully self moderated for over a decade and there has been no need for this.
I have been playing Minecraft since before it was released officially, since around 2010 in alpha when the only available version was entirely web-based and there was no downloadable version. I am absolutely disgusted that this is what has become of this game. If player chat reporting is implemented, Mojang/Microsoft will not only be losing my support and playership, but I would imagine that of thousands upon thousands more.
One of the things that makes Minecraft beautiful is that in it you are free to express yourself in any way you want. Being banned from individual servers isn't the end of the world; you can always hop on another server to play. The ability to report players to a non-server-based moderator to review their chat messages and decide whether or not to permanently ban them is, honestly, so detrimental to the experience as to be considered game-breaking. If this is implemented, this WILL kill Minecraft. Please, do not do this.
Also, on a side-note, I find the fact that you can report someone for self-harm/su*c*de related messages incredibly disturbing. As someone who has been helped through some extremely tough times and someone who has helped others through similar circumstances while on private servers, I am appalled that even a mention of these topics could result in a ban. Banning these topics would not help individuals struggling with mental health. It would actively hurt us by removing our social support.
Listen to your community or else you're going to face backlash, pirates, abandonment, naysayers, etc. You're going to lose so many sales because of this. People have shown they're willing to abandon you over this. You're on thin ice, Microsoft. You're headed for disaster.
Please remove the reporting System or at least make it optional.
We already have the option to mute people and I don't want your moderators to decide if I want to read the swearing of other, I dont want your moderators to decide what is to much, I don't want your moderators to decide who is able to play on my server.
You have already proven how flawed the system is on the Bedrock Edition. DON'T INFECT JAVA WITH IT. I dont want that PaRiTy.I know you only care about sales, but do you want to advertise a "friendly comunity" or a "muted comunity with occasional random bans".
It's simply a bad idea!
And I'm not the only one who thinks so, so for once keep your word and listen to the comunity! Please!
Here. My reasons why the Chat Reporting feature should be removed or at least changed in Minecraft: *Java Edition*
A. Minecraft Servers hosted by people can deal with the chat moderation just as well if not better than Mojang/Microsoft’s chat moderation.
B. Yes; chat reporting is sorta a thing in Minecraft: *Bedrock Edition*, but the system is too flawed there. If the feature does get implemented anyways, then moderation on Minecraft: *Bedrock Edition* needs a lot of changing up.
C. The Community. The Community doesn’t like the changes, and I am fairly certain a 12 yr. kid knows how bad this feature would bring to Minecraft.
D. There does need to be a level of moderation, but chat reporting isn’t the way to go. There could be better ways to go about moderation; like parental controls and server owners having a rating from 0 (kid friendly) to 10 (not kid friendly) or something along those lines.
E. You don’t need to be “banned” off Minecraft: *Java Edition* if you made one bad decision. Maybe a chat mute by Mojang/Microsoft on servers/realms, and, if continued, a temp ban, and then a perm ban.
The Fact that the community as a whole for java is highly against this and yet you are still trying to force this through is a major issue and shows to us that you do not value the input of the players, as this reporting system will cause massive waves of issues, especially from servers like 2b2t which are know for there lack of rules and anarchy, and if this gets pushed through mojang and microsoft will most likely be hit by large scale cyberattacks from those communities, furthermore private servers should have no moderation as most private servers are made by small groups of friends, which some people would make hate jokes or stuff on those servers because it is with a small group of friends who find it funny. This is still a horrendously bad idea and should be completely scrapped as a whole
As others have stated, the FAQ misses the point the wider community is making entirely. Nobody asked for Mojang moderation on private servers, as the vast majority of those servers already have moderation staff, plugins, and more to keep players safe. Adding this will not improve Minecraft but make it harder for everyone to enjoy the game, as is already visible in Bedrock Edition.
Please remove the player chat reporting feature. This goes against everything Minecraft is and shouldn't even be considered.
We've gone this far without it and all of the sudden this is being pushed? This is unnecessary and is leading to distrust from the player base and an inefficient system. Take the feedback from the community and save the mistake of letting this game going in the wrong direction.
I have nothing against the idea of chat moderation however trying to implement this into the game would be devastating. Minecraft is a fine example of what player moderation is capable of and really shows the inefficiencies of these chat moderation systems.
Minecraft is not a game that can support a system like this. The only real solution to preserve Minecraft's multiplayer integrity would be to abandon the idea and instead potentially allow parents to create blacklist for certain words and phrases. Let me be clear, I mean parents not Microsoft or Mojang.
For the foreseeable future I will be staying on older version or using tools to disable this system, I will not allow myself or my server members to be falsely banned over the things we say to each other.
Mojang I do have a message to you. I don't know how much involvement you have in this but I hope you can recognize the communities ability to self moderate, we've been doing it since multiplayer was an option and I hope you will allow us to keep it that way.
