I enjoy the shield mechanics in Java Minecraft, where you can hold down the right mouse button and it lifts the shield to block attacks, so long as you aren't holding a place-able block/item and pointing to a surface on which it can be placed.
Shifting to raise the shield in Minecraft Bedrock is very inconvenient and is a clunky mechanic to have to work with. While the entire second-hand system is already worse (than Java) by only being able to access it while the inventory screen is open, and not being able to see the durability or count unless again, you open the inventory screen, this makes it difficult to judge how long the shield will last without constantly opening the inventory screen. That of course, is difficult to do mid-combat.
Movement is also hindered in a different way. While in both versions, 'using' the shield slows the player, while backing up, in Java you can simply walk backwards off of ledges for example. However, because the crouch must be used in Bedrock to raise the shield, this now becomes a manner of jumping backwards, which can cause more falling damage.
If there were a way to key-bind the shield in Bedrock, that would give both those who prefer to use the mouse, and those who like using crouch their preferred choice. In the meantime though, the shield blocks sight, is a hassle to use, and limits motion much more than in Java Minecraft.
